How to Pass College Algebra

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Find out what you need to do to pass your college algebra class with this article. You'll get information about studying and class time, as well as where you can go to get online assistance to help you meet this goal.

Make Sure You're Ready

Many schools offer a diagnostic assessment that you can complete before signing up for a college algebra course. Complete this test to make sure that you have the foundational math knowledge you need to successfully take this class. If you're not ready, work on what you need to know to improve and sign up for the algebra class next semester.

Focus on Class Time

Missing even a single college algebra class can make it hard to stay on track. These courses typically cover multiple topics in a single class period and go over many problems. Make sure you're there and taking good notes, so you don't fall behind.

You should try to write down any formulas your instructor provides you with. This will help you with any work your professor might assign to you later. If you have a question about something your instructor covers in class, make sure you bring it up as quickly as possible. Completing problems in the wrong way because you're not sure how to do them properly isn't going to help you in the long run.

Know Your Calculator

If you haven't used a graphing calculator before, you should get familiar with it before class starts. Take the time to figure out how it performs different functions so you're not stuck trying to make it work when you should be trying to solve a problem! Some schools offer workshops that can help you learn how to use your calculator. Check with your school to see if this is an available option for you.

Study Hard

Complete all of your assigned homework. You can also consider working on the extra practice problems in your textbook. The more algebra problems you solve, the better prepared you'll be for your exams. Give yourself enough time to work on homework and to prepare for exams. You should be studying a few days before a test, not trying to do it all the night before.

Know How to Take the Tests

Make sure you show your work! Most math professors want you to ensure that you can accurately complete each step of the computations they assign you. Take time to write each step of each problem in a neat, legible way, using the proper mathematical symbols.

You can also complete easier problems first. This helps you to build your confidence before you tackle the more complicated algebraic equations.
