How to Pass Organic Chemistry

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Get helpful tips on how to improve your study habits and make the most of your class time so you can succeed in your organic chemistry class. You'll also find online resources you can use to supplement instruction.

Keep Up with Your Readings

Strive to complete your assigned readings by the time they're due. Organic chemistry courses cover a lot of information, so it's easy to fall behind. Taking the time to read your textbook can help you absorb the information you'll need to retain to pass your course.

Attend Your Classes

Your instructor is there to help you pass the class, but he or she can't do that if you're not in your seat. Make sure you get to class on time and take good notes, recording any terms your instructor writes on the board. Classroom time also provides you with an easy way to ask your instructor any questions you have.

Study Outside of Class

Passing organic chemistry will require you to put in a little study time every day. Take the time to read over your notes so you don't forget important concepts covered earlier in the course. You should also work on solving as many organic chemistry problems as you can. Don't stop after you've worked on the problems your instructor assigned! You'll find extra questions in your text book.

Joining a study group can also help you build up your organic chemistry skills. Work together with your fellow students to go over particularly tricky concepts. Design flashcards with your group and quiz one another on key terms and chemical reaction mechanisms.

Some schools also offer extra review sessions, especially around midterms and finals. These opportunities allow you to further refine your organic chemistry skills, and some teachers offer extra credit for attending, which might be just what you need to pass the course!
