Take Practice Exams
One of the best ways to pass the exam is to practice it, especially since your exam may include question types that you did not previously encounter in your nursing program. You can take practice tests that are offered by Elsevier, the company that developed the exam, or find additional practice questions and exams online.
Former students recommend utilizing HESI nursing case studies and HESI practice tests. Your instructors in your nursing program may require you to purchase these resources.
Enroll in a Study Program
You can find online access to a study program that can provide you with review materials, more practice tests, study forums and additional advice for studying. Unfortunately, most programs cost a membership or course fee for access to resources, but may provide additional study materials and forums to ask questions.
Purchase Study Guides and Flashcards
A number of study guides are available for purchase online and through your school's bookstore. You can find HESI comprehensive reviews in paperback form. Also, many textbooks come with an access code that will link you to online resources. You may have to get these access codes from your instructor.
Additionally, since the HESI Exit Exam helps you prepare for the NCLEX exams, studying from those review books will help you prepare for the HESI exam. Flashcards are another option for purchase to help you study.
Take Advantage of Mobile Technology
You can download both HESI and NCLEX study materials to your Apple products through the App Store. Additionally, eBooks are available for both Apple and Android devices. You can find a number of nursing manuals for your Kindle, Nook and Google devices. Further, you may find mobile medical dictionaries and drug reference manuals helpful as you study.
Involve Your Classmates
Organizing a study group may also help you pass the HESI Exit Exam. Your group can use the texts and resources supplied by your program to study. Group discussions analyzing practice exam answers can promote understanding of the topics that will be tested.
Be Competent in the Exam Topics
On the HESI Exit Exam, you will be tested on all the topics that you studied in your nursing program, so it is important to have a thorough understanding of your core curriculum. The three primary topics are listed below with examples of each topic.
|Nursing Process||Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation|
|Client Needs||Infection control, basic care and comfort, health promotion and maintenance, care management and safety|
|Specialty Areas||Critical care, geriatrics, pediatrics and mental and psychiatric care|
Study.com offers several courses that can help you review these topics with video lessons and transcripts, as well as give you the option to take quizzes. Check out some of these courses and lessons:
Understand the Exam Structure
To pass the exam, it is important to have an idea of what the exam will be like. The HESI Exit Exam is computer-based and contains either 75 or 150 questions depending on whether it is a HESI RN Exam or a HESI LPN Exam. Most of these questions are designed to make you think critically as opposed to simply recalling factual information.
You will find several types of questions on the exam, most of them being multiple-choice. However, you will also find questions where there could be one answer to a question or there could be multiple answers to that question. You may have to rank answer choices or fill in a blank. If a question requires a calculation, the testing program provides a calculator. Finally, you may have to interpret charts or identify answer choices on a graph.
