Passing the NCLEX-PN

The NCLEX-PN covers a lot of important medical information for aspiring practical nurses. In order to successfully pass the exam, you should devote your attention to reviewing as much of the information that you'll be tested on as possible. To pass the NCLEX-PN, you'll need to be able to demonstrate an understanding of these topics:

  • Management of care
  • Safety and infection control
  • Health promotion
  • Psychosocial integrity
  • Basic care and comfort
  • Therapies (pharmacological and parenteral)
  • Risk potential
  • Physiological adaptation

Review Your Notes

You won't have to take the NCLEX-PN Exam until after you've completed a practical nursing program. Looking over your textbooks and reviewing your notes will help you refresh your understanding of the concepts covered by this exam.

Check Out Test Prep Guides

There are numerous guides available that can help you get ready for this exam. You can buy them at different retailers, both online and at bookstores. You'll want to try to find guides that provide an in-depth review of each of the subjects that appear on the exam and that offer you practice tests with solutions so that you can gauge your readiness for the big exam.

Get Online Help

You can also utilize online courses to help you get ready for the NCLEX-PN exam. Study.com offers Nursing Fundamentals and Anatomy and Physiology courses that can help you review all the critical concepts you'll need to know to pass the NCLEX-PN Exam. You'll be able to view video lessons, complete interactive quizzes and contact nursing and science experts if you have any questions. These courses are self-paced and can be accessed anytime to make your preparations even easier.

Pay Attention to the Questions

A practice exam can help you get ready for the questions you'll find on the NCLEX-PN. You can improve your chances of passing the exam by making sure that you're answering the question you're being asked and keeping in mind that the most complete answers typically allow you the smallest chance of making an error. You'll also want to avoid answers that are subjective!

If an answer shares terms in common with the question, you should give it further consideration. Answers that ensure the client is not harmed are generally correct. Similarly, correct answers don't usually require the nurse to leave the patient. Focus on applying the nursing process whenever it seems useful. Finally, make sure you're familiar with the treatment options for patients suffering from different mental or emotional disorders.

Register for the NCLEX-PN

Once you've studied up on the major concepts covered on the NCLEX-PN, it's time to register. The registration process has two steps. You'll start by applying for licensure through your selected state's board of nursing, which determines your eligibility to take the exam. You can then register online or via telephone through Pearson VUE. You'll be expected to pay the test fee during the registration process, and you'll need to provide an e-mail address along with a program code associated with the school where you completed your training.

After you've completed the registration process and your eligibility has been determined, you'll receive an authorization to test via e-mail.
