Instructor: Shelby Golden
In order to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma in New York State, you must successfully complete an LOTE exam in the language of your choice. One of your language options is Spanish. Find out how you can prepare for the Spanish LOTE exam with this article.

Preparing for Success on the Spanish LOTE Exam

The Spanish LOTE exam is given after you've completed six credits worth of Spanish classes. These classes cover the material that will appear on the exam. Regular attendance, participation in class activities and good study habits can give you a head start in preparing for this test.

Having a good idea of what the Spanish LOTE exam is like can also help you prepare. A description of the test's two parts - spoken and written - is included below, along with some suggestions for how you might go about reviewing exam material.

Part I: Brush Up on Your Conversational Skills

During this part of the test, you'll be asked to complete two randomly selected speaking tasks in which you might express your opinion, offer information or suggest a solution to a problem. These tasks will require you to complete six interactions with the teacher administering the exam.

To get ready for these tasks, check out Study.com's Beginning Spanish course to review conversational phrases and vocabulary. Lessons are full of easy-to-follow video lessons that cover the nouns and verb conjugations needed to discuss such topics as shopping, pastimes, TV and movies, future plans, weather and seasons, family and advice giving, all of which have been included on previous versions of the test.

Part II: Practice Reading and Listening Comprehension

This part of the exam is written and includes a series of listening and reading comprehension sections in which you must listen to or read sample passages and then answer a series of multiple-choice questions about them. There is also a writing section requiring you to complete two out of three writing prompts.

The New York State Education Department offers previous versions of this part of the test on its website (www.nyesregents.org). Reviewing these tests can give you an idea of the types of questions you'll find on the exam and the difficulty level to expect.

The Study.com course also includes audio exercises that allow you to practice your listening skills, in addition to self-assessment quizzes that can familiarize you with the exam's multiple-choice question format.
