PECT Exams: Testing Information
The PECT exams refer to four exams for Pennsylvania educators. One is a basic skills exam called the Pre-service Academic Performance Assessment (PAPA), and the other three are for certifications in either:
- Special Education PreK-8
- Special Education 7-12
The Pennsylvania Department of Education teams with the educational company Pearson VUE to administer these exams.
Each test involves two or three modules and these are all offered as a computer-based test (CBT). These can be taken at a Pearson VUE owned and operated center or at a partner test center.
For the PreK-4 exams only, test-takers can choose the remote testing option with online proctoring, allowing the exam to be completed at home or an alternative location. This option requires candidates to have a desktop or laptop with a single monitor, take a system test to check that your equipment meets requirements, and read special testing policies.
How to Register
The first step in the registration process is creating an account through Pennsylvania Educator Certification Tests at pa.nesinc.com. This account is used both to register for exams and to receive exam scores. All scheduling, rescheduling, and cancellations are done online through the account
When registering for an exam, test-takers will have to agree to several policies, which contain the following information:

|Score Reporting Policies||Receiving test scores, voiding test scores|
Registration and payment must both be done on the PECT website. Payment can be made with a VISA or MasterCard credit card or debit card. For payment through check, test-takers must contact customer service and await further instructions.
Once registration is issued, it is valid for one year and a test appointment can be made online. Test-takers should go to the website, log in to their account, go to the registrations page, and click the Schedule tab. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rescheduling and cancellation are also processed through the PECT website.

When to Register
Candidates may want to register shortly after they complete their undergraduate studies. In general, it is recommended to leave ample time for studying and test preparation for an important certification exam. Depending on the candidate's schedule or whether they are already a working professional, they may choose an additional half year to study for the PECT exams. Ultimately, it is an individual choice that depends on someone's preparation time.

Some college students who are enrolled in a degree program and are receiving financial aid may be eligible for a fee waiver. The Fee Waiver Request Form, available through the PECT website, must be mailed to the PECT Program prior to registration.
