Idaho's 3rd Grade Science Standards

The Idaho Department of Education requires 3rd graders to work on 5 science standards. These standards were designed to help ensure that students graduate with a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and the skills to implement what they've learned. Local school districts can adjust their curriculum to meet the needs of their district, but in general, each curriculum should include the following content knowledge:

The Nature of Science

Students will learn about the different parts of a system. They'll learn to observe the world around them and to make use of models. They'll also use multiple systems of measurement, consider scientific questions, carry out tests, use scientific tools, make predictions, use multi-step instructions and communicate their findings. Kids will be encouraged to look at possible alternative explanations to what they have found. Students can work at home on these science basics lessons to get help developing the skills they need to master this standard. They'll get information about measurement systems, the scientific process and key science terms. Because students can work on these lessons in any order they wish, they'll be able to focus on the areas where they need the most assistance.

Physical Science

While studying physical science, students will learn about the properties of gases, liquids and solids. They'll consider how heating and cooling can affect different materials and focus on both potential and kinetic energy. Working on these physics lessons for kids will allow students to review the different states of matter and some types of energy. They can check their understanding of these concepts by working on interactive quizzes and a practice exam.

Biology

Ways that living creatures, including plants and animals, adapt to their environment will be discussed at this grade level. Students will also spend time learning how much energy plants, animals and living systems need. They'll focus on food chains and food webs. Kids can learn what different animals and plants need to survive with these fun lessons. These lessons allow students to work at their own pace and go back and review any information that they need to spend extra time on.

Earth and Space Systems

Instruction on earth and space systems should deal with the processes that lead to days, seasons and the yearly cycle of the Earth. Students can reinforce their understanding of the Earth's place in the solar system and how it is affected by the Sun and moon with these astronomy lessons. Working on these lessons can help kids make sure they stay on track with their in-class schoolwork.

Personal and Social Perspectives; Technology

Environmental issues that affect the local community will be discussed in this grade. Students will also learn how tools are developed. Kids will be introduced to the benefits of recycling. These environmental science lessons cover a wide variety of environmental concerns. Students can discover information about recycling, sustainability and options for conservation. If students have trouble understanding any part of these lessons, they can get in contact with environmental science experts for help.
