Get informed about the science standards for 5th grade in Illinois with this article. You can find out what students are expected to learn at this grade and learn how to access useful study resources.

5th Grade Science Standards in Illinois

Illinois now uses Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These standards are divided into:

  • Disciplinary Core Ideas
  • Science and Engineering Practices
  • Crosscutting Concepts

These three areas are designed to ensure that students get a solid scientific education. Each aspect of these standards are used together to help students develop different aspects of scientific understanding.

Science Core Ideas for 5th Grade

The core ideas focus on the scientific facts students will be learning in this grade. 5th graders will consider:

Structure and Properties of Matter

Students will learn about the particles that make up matter. They will study the conservation of matter and learn how measurements can be applied while identifying different materials. Chemical reactions will also be considered. Kids can access these lessons on physics and chemistry to review information about matter and different reactions. These lessons include short quizzes that allow students to check their understanding of this subject.

Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems

The way energy moves from the sun to food will be considered in this grade, along with how plants and animals obtain the materials they need to survive. The movement of energy and matter throughout ecosystems will also be discussed. The processes involved in an ecosystem can be studied further with these environmental science lessons. Kids can work on these lessons at their own pace and review what they've read as many times as they need to.

Earth's Systems

The geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere will be covered in 5th grade. Students will learn about the role of water on Earth. They'll also consider how humans affect different Earth systems. Students can learn about the water cycle and effects of water with these geology lessons for kids. Geology experts are also available to answer any questions students have while working on these lessons.

Space Systems: Stars and the Solar System

Students will study gravity, the Sun and other stars. They'll also focus on the orbit and rotation of the Earth. Checking out these astronomy lessons is a great way for students to go over the facts about stars and other celestial bodies that they're covering in class. These lessons can be accessed from any computer and at any time, making it easy to personalize study time.

Engineering Design

Throughout elementary school, students will work on understanding engineering principles. These principles include working with engineering problems and coming up with engineering solutions. Kids will also work on choosing the best possible solution for multiple options.

Science and Engineering Practices for 5th Grade

Across all K-12 grades in NGSS, students will practice developing scientific skills students to help them better understand scientific knowledge and application. By participating in these practices, 5th graders will complete investigations, use models and mathematics, argue while using evidence and use information. Students will also work on understanding the ways science explains natural phenomena.

Crosscutting Concepts for 5th Grade

Crosscutting concepts also appear throughout different grade levels and scientific subject areas in the NGSS. In this grade, students will continue to work on:

  • Recognizing patterns
  • Understanding causal relationships
  • Observing energy transfers
  • Using system models to better understand systems
  • Understanding variance in size across systems and processes
  • Science, natural systems and the natural world
