Projects for Macbeth

You can encourage your students to engage with this play in a number of ways, depending on where their interest lies. When you give your students a choice of possible projects, this can help them develop a deeper interest in the source material. Depending on the amount of time you have to cover Macbeth, you might even have students complete multiple projects, one for each act of the play. Check out these options for your class:

Drama

This type of project can allow students to display their dramatic skills! You can direct students to pick a scene or more to perform for the class. Students can work in small groups, or even tackle a soliloquy if they feel up to it.

Instruct your students that they should try to use set pieces and props, even costumes, if possible. You should grade students on how well the scene seems to be rehearsed, your ability to hear them and how well they portray the characters.

Writing

Students can use this project to stretch their creative wings. Give them the choice of creating a piece of artistic writing that focuses on:

  • Adapting a scene to the present day
  • Addressing a 'what if' scenario
  • A possible backstory for the character of their choice
  • What the witches will do next (and who they'll do it to!)

Students should focus on their creativity for this project. However, it's also important that they focus on the material found in the play and demonstrate a level of care with their source material. They should also write in a neat and appropriate manner.

Visualization

Students can work on this project to examine the play through visual media. You can offer the following possible options for them to create:

  • A poster for the play
  • Maps of the areas in the play
  • A sculpture, painting or illustration that deals with a scene of the student's choice
  • Original costume design

Encourage your students to use their imagination while working on this project to create an original piece of work. Be sure to let them know that they will be graded on effort and shouldn't just throw something together at the last minute.

Quick Tips

Your students can check out this ''Macbeth'' Study Guide as they work on their projects. This course includes short, interesting video lessons that cover the major characters and plot developments of the play. It can also help your students review important themes and literary devices used by Shakespeare throughout Macbeth.
