Dates for the Massachusetts Real Estate Exam
The Massachusetts real estate exam is not offered only on a select few days, but on a continual basis throughout the year. Testing is managed by PSI Services, which is contracted as a vendor by the state of Massachusetts to oversee and administer the exams. You can take the licensing exam at any PSI testing facility in Massachusetts and on any of the dates available for that specific month. Please be aware, however, that seats in the testing facility are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you wait too long to schedule your exam, your preferred date or location may no longer be available. So, it's best to plan ahead and schedule your exam in advance.
How to Schedule the Exam
Let's walk through the process of scheduling a licensing exam. This overall process is the same for real estate brokers and sales associates, although the actual exam will be different.
To start, you must apply to the state of Massachusetts to take the licensing exam. This includes paying an application fee and will require you to demonstrate that you have completed the educational requirements.
After this application has been approved, you will receive a Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB) from PSI and the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons. The CIB will be like your handbook and will help guide you through the rest of the process.
The next step will be to register for the exam and schedule your testing date and location. This can be done through standard mail, email, fax, telephone, or online. Online registration and scheduling is the preferred and simplest method, as it can be done at any time on any day. For other forms of scheduling, you will have to work around the business hours of the testing center.
If you would like to preview available testing dates and centers before you formally register for the exam, you can do so by visiting the PSI Online website and selecting the following from the pull-down tabs:
- Organization: Government/State Licensing Agencies
- Jurisdiction: Massachusetts
- Account: MA Real Estate
- License: Select the license for which you are applying
At this point, you will be able to preview testing dates at the various centers around the state. Testing facilities can be found in Auburn, Boston, Fall River, Lawrence, and West Springfield.
Important Dates and Scheduling Requirements
While tests are available year round, there are some timing issues you'll need to consider. First, you must schedule your exam at least one business day prior to the date of the exam, before 4 p.m. PST. Please remember that just because you can schedule your exam this late doesn't mean you should. Testing facilities can fill up, so the center and date you planned on may not be available if you wait that long.
Additionally, if you wait until the day before the exam to schedule, you aren't eligible for any refund or fee transfer should you need to reschedule or cancel. As long as you cancel or reschedule two days in advance before 5 p.m. PST, your exam fees can be applied to a new exam. If you cancel or reschedule after that cutoff, however, you lose that fee and will have to pay a rescheduling fee as well.
Finally, remember that you must pass both parts of the licensing exam within two years of completing the education requirements. If you fail to do so, you may have to start the entire process from the beginning.
