MBLEx Exam: Registration Process
Taking the MBLEx is the next step for an aspiring massage therapist after completing a massage therapy program. The majority of individuals who want to work in this field will likely want to register for this exam, as 49 states and U.S. territories have regulations in place the govern the massage therapy field. This means that obtaining a professional licensure, as can be obtained by passing the MBLEx, is generally necessary in order to establish a legitimate massage therapy practice.
In order to register for the MBLEx, students must first submit an application to the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), the organization that administers and oversees the MBLEx. This application can be submitted either online or by mail. At the same time that students submit an application, they must also pay the test fee of $195 and request that the school they attended submit records detailing their attendance and completed courses.
Within five business days of receiving the materials described above, the FSMTB will process the application and either approve or reject applicants. Applicants who are approved receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) via email, which indicates that they are then allowed to register for the exam. It is important for applicants to keep in mind that they must register for the MBLEx within 90 of receiving their ATT. When they are ready to schedule the exam, students can either do so online or by phone. Once the exam is scheduled, students can expect to receive a confirmation via email that confirms the day, time, and location that they selected. After this point, the only step left in the process is to show up on test day and take the exam.
Preparing for the MBLEx Exam
Beyond registering and being approved to actually take the exam, another important step for students is to prepare properly for the MBLEx exam by studying. Individuals may decide to study for the exam on their own by reviewing materials and concepts they learned in massage therapy school or they may be interested in using dedicated MBLEx preparation materials.
The FSMTB provides information on their website regarding the content of the exam. There, students can learn about the major concepts that appear on the exam and what proportion of the questions come from various content areas. For example, students can expect that around 11% of the exam covers topics related to anatomy and physiology, while around 16% covers ethics, laws and regulations.
In addition to providing individual with information about what the exam covers, the FSMTB has also created a study book that students can purchase for $29.95. This book includes sample test questions that students can use to prepare for the exam.
Students may also be interested in preparing for the exam using online resources, like those provided by Study.com.
