Mechanical Engineering Scholarships for High School Seniors

Professional organizations in mechanical engineering offer several scholarship opportunities for high school students. Take a look at the following article to get more information on scholarships offered by the American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME) and SAE International.

Scholarships for High School Seniors in Mechanical Engineering

ASME Auxiliary Lucy and Charles W.E. Clark Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for high school seniors who want to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. To qualify, an applicant must be a current participant in a FIRST Robotics or Tech Challenge program. Only students who plan on attending an ABET accredited college on a full time basis can apply for this scholarship. Also, an applicant must be nominated by an ASME member to be eligible for this scholarship.

For 2016, several $5,000 scholarships will be distributed in August. These funds will be sent to the school that each recipient is enrolled in.

SAE International Scholarships

Dan and Vicky Hancock Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering Excellence

This scholarship was created by Dan Hancock, a longtime employee of General Motors and his wife Vicky Hancock, who are both avid volunteers and philanthropists. To be eligible, students must be United States residents and plan on majoring in mechanical engineering. Also required of applicants is a 3.5 GPA, a composite ACT score of 24 and/or an SAT math score of 600 or more and a critical reading score of 550 or more.

For 2016, one award of $5,500 will be distributed to the applicant's school of enrollment by August. Unlike some scholarships, this one can be renewed several times by reapplying for the scholarship.

BMW/SAE Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship is sponsored by BMW to help fund the education of prospective engineers. High school students who are United States residents and plan to enroll in an ABET accredited engineering program are eligible. Also required of applicants is a 3.75 GPA, and a 90th percentile ranking in math and critical reasoning for the SAT or 90th percentile for the ACT composite score.

One scholarship is awarded each year. For 2016, the amount is $1,500. It has the ability to be renewed for three more years. This award is distributed to the recipient's school by August.

Ford/SAE Partnership for Advanced Studies Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for students who are current or previous participants in the Ford Next Generation Learning Community or the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS). High school seniors who are United States residents and plan to enroll in an ABET accredited engineering program are eligible. Also required of applicants is a 3.0 GPA, and a 90th percentile ranking in math and critical reasoning for the SAT or 90th percentile for the ACT composite score.

One scholarship in the amount of $5,500 is awarded each year. This award is distributed by August to the winner's school of choice.
