# Minnesota State Math Standards

## Math Standards in Minnesota

Minnesota last updated its math standards in 2007. The standards are due to be revised, but the update is currently postponed. As of now, standards are divided into the following strands:

• Number and operation
• Algebra
• Geometry and measurement
• Data analysis and probability

## Elementary School Math Standards in Minnesota

Students in elementary school will work with numbers up to:

• 31 in kindergarten

They'll also represent combinations and separations with objects and use models while solving addition and subtraction problems. By 2nd grade, students should be able to complete addition and subtraction problems with 1 or 2 digit numbers. In 3rd grade, they will begin working on multiplication and division. Multi-digit numbers will be divided by 5th grade.

They'll work with patterns and number sentences. Students will learn about fractions and input-output rules. By 4th grade, they will be comparing fractions and decimals. They will also learn to convert fractions to decimals and back, in addition to working with mixed numbers. Students will learn to work with tables, graphs and charts. Time will be spent working to understand equations and inequalities.

Students in these grades will learn about 2-D and 3-D shapes and use them as models. The characteristics of basic shapes and polygons will be covered. They'll also compare and sort different objects. Students will learn to measure time, money, length, perimeter, angles, area, surface area and temperature. Symmetries will be studied. Students will learn how to find median, range and mode.

## Middle School Math Standards in Minnesota

Middle schoolers will learn to be comfortable working with fractions, percents, ratios and decimals. They'll divide and multiply decimal numbers, mixed numbers and fractions. Students will begin working with negative numbers and both linear and nonlinear functions.

Students will focus on proportionality and proportional relationships. They'll use variables in equations and work to solve equations both numerically and graphically. Algebraic properties and linear expressions will be covered in class.

Calculations involving both 2D and 3D figures will need to be completed. Students will need to convert measurements and solve problems involving circles. The Pythagorean Theorem will be discussed in class, in addition to coordinate systems. Probabilities will be considered in these grades. Students will get familiar with histograms, scatterplots and circle graphs.

## High School Math Standards in Minnesota

In high school, students will learn about exponential, quadratic, nth root and linear functions. They'll get familiar with polynomials and radicals.

Additionally, students will learn to measure both plane and solid geometric figures. They'll work with axioms and focus on the properties associated with geometric figures. Students will use data and statistical thinking to work towards conclusions. In these grades, students will work with calculating probabilities.

Working on these high school courses in algebra I, algebra II and geometry can help students get practice solving the complicated mathematics problems they'll be working on in high school.
