MTEL Test Dates & Registration

MTEL Test Dates

Most tests in the MTEL series are administered Monday through Saturday on a year-round basis, while other exams are only available during specified testing windows. These take place around four to five times a year and last anywhere from about two to four weeks, depending on the exam. Tests offered within these windows are as follows:

  • Language Tests (French, German, Spanish, Chinese Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, Russian)
  • Latin and Classical Humanities
  • Academically Advanced
  • Adult Basic Education
  • Political Science/Political Philosophy
  • Speech
  • Dance

MTEL Registration

The registration process begins by creating an account with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Educator Licensure and Renewal System (ELAR). Some schools actually recommend creating this account early on in your education program to ensure your testing and licensure application process goes as smoothly as possible.

Once you have an ELAR account, you will be assigned an MEPID number, which you can use to create a separate account on the MTEL site and register for an exam. It is at this point that you will be able to pay for and schedule your test appointment. The online system is available 7 days per week, 24 hours per day.

Assuming you follow all steps correctly and your payment processes, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from Pearson VUE that lists your test date, time, and location. This e-mail will also include the address and phone number of your testing site, as well as directions to this site.

Scheduling Considerations

Regardless of whether you're sitting for an exam administered continuously or during a testing window, you'll need to be aware of any time constraints posed by your career and academic needs prior to scheduling your exams.

Some schools require you to pass relevant MTEL exams before beginning a student teaching assignment and suggest getting the Communication and Literacy Skills test - which is required of all teacher candidates - out of the way early on in your program, since education topics are not covered on this exam.

You'll also want to keep in mind that seats for test appointments are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You should register for your MTEL exams as soon as you know when you want to take them so that you can get the testing appointment you want.
