Understanding Your MTLE Test Score
Passing the MTLE exams is a crucial step in obtaining a license to teach in Minnesota. Passing scores are determined by the state's Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board.
In order to determine a pass or fail, a test taker's raw score - or the number of points a test taker earns on their exam's multiple-choice and written response questions - is then converted to a scaled score. The MTLE content area tests are scored on a scale ranging from 100 to 300 points, while the MN NES Essential Academic Skills exam is scaled from 400 to 600.
Scoring the MN NES Essential Academic Skills Exam
If you need to take the MN NES Essential Academic Skills exam in order to earn an initial license to teach in Minnesota, you will need to earn a score of 520 or above on each of three subtests in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Once you have taken the exam, you will receive a detailed score report that includes info for each subtest of the exam. In addition to your score, you will be able to see performance indices that indicate how well you did in comparison to the passing standard. These indicate whether you answered most, many, some, or few of the multiple-choice questions correctly as well as the strength of your response to the writing prompt.
Scoring the MTLE Exams
In order to pass one of the MTLE content area exams, you must score at least a 240 or above. Score reports for these tests include performance indices that break down your performance on the various subareas that are tested on each subtest of your particular MTLE exam. This report may be helpful if you do not pass a test because it will allow you to assess any areas in which you should focus your study efforts.
Getting Your Score Report
You can access your score report through your MTLE account. The availability of your scores will depend on when you took your test. Test dates are grouped into testing windows, and scores for each window have a designated score release date. These typically occur once a month.
