NBPTS Renewal Requirements

Instructor: Shelby Golden
You can use this article to learn about the renewal requirements of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). You'll be able to explore each component of this renewal process and find several resources that can help you prepare.

The NBPTS Renewal Process

Nationally Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) must renew their certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) every ten years. However, this renewal period will be shortened to five years in 2021. To apply for renewal at the present time, you will need to complete a Profile of Professional Growth (PPG). This profile includes these components:

Component 1

Reply to prompts that deal with four areas where you have demonstrated professional growth. These replies will be referred to as Personal Growth Examples (PGEs). You must provide exactly three pages of commentary and two pages of samples for each of these replies.

Component 2

Pick out one of the PGEs from Component 1 and show how you apply the skill demonstrated in this example to improve student learning by creating a ten minute video of a lesson. You may not edit any segment of the video, and it must be date-stamped. You must also include a written commentary on this video, but it must not exceed four pages. In this commentary, you must identify which PGE you're demonstrating.

Component 3

You will select a different PGE from Component 1 and either film a six minute video related to your teaching, or send in up to eight samples of your student's work as it relates to this example. As with the previous component, you may not edit any segment of the video, but a date stamp isn't required. Either option that you choose must include up to four pages of commentary associated with this component.

After completing the other three components of the renewal process, you will need to write a reflection that deals with the way these components connect to one another. You should include information about challenges you have faced as an educator, as well as your future goals for professional improvement. This reflection should be no longer than three pages.

Completing the PPG

You can find the forms for completing your PPG on the NBPTS's website ( This website also includes specific prompts that you should use while working on the PPG and additional information related to this renewal process.

The NBPTS encourages teachers to focus their PPGs on the Five Core Propositions set up by the national board. These propositions include being committed to your students, understanding what you teach and how to teach, being responsible for student learning, learning from experience and being a member of the learning community. You can go over information on how these propositions might be applied with these courses on:

Once you have completed your PPG, you will need to submit it online to the NBPTS. You will also need to pay a renewal fee, which is currently $1,250.
