## Math Standards for North Dakota

North Dakota's math standards were last updated in 2011 and are based on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The standards stress the following criteria for teaching math concepts and skills:

• Model with mathematics
• Attend to precision
• Reason abstractly and quantitatively
• Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
• Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
• Use appropriate tools strategically
• Look for and make use of structure
• Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

### Kindergarten

Students should learn to use objects to represent numbers from 1 to 100 in order to solve math problems. They also need to be able to describe the world through geometric shapes, using geometric vocabulary.

At this level, students work on adding and subtracting whole numbers, adding whole numbers up to 100, subtracting multiples of 10, understanding the process of measurement, and combining and recognizing geometric shapes.

The standards for second graders involve additional work on base-ten, improving fluency with addition and subtraction, working with standard measurements, and examining geometric shapes.

Students need to be able to understand and use multiplication and division up to 100, work with fractions, including those with numerators, visualize and identify arrays and area, and analyze 2-D shapes.

Fourth graders should exhibit an understanding of multi-digital multiplication, be able to use division to find quotients, add and subtract fractions using like denominators, perform fraction multiplication with whole numbers, and discover symmetry through constructing and examining 2-D shapes.

In fifth grade, students expand on the skills built in previous grades to perform more advanced addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions, with some limited division of fractions. They should be improving their skills working with 2-digit divisors as well as decimals. Students are also introduced to the concept of volume at this grade level.

#### Elementary Math Tips

Parents and teachers of elementary students can support what students' are learning in the classroom with this Math for Kids Course. The engaging video lessons make difficult subjects easier to learn, and each lesson includes brief quizzes that allow children to apply the knowledge they have gained.

Sixth grade students are expected to make connections between ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division, finish learning about fraction division, explore rational numbers, including negative numbers, examine expressions and equations, and gain an introduction to statistics.

Seventh grade standards ask students to begin work with proportional relationships, perform operations with rational numbers, and work with expressions and linear equations. Students should be able to use geometric constructions of two and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems using volume, area, and surface area. Finally, students are expected to use information about samples to draw conclusions about populations.

In their last year of middle school, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency using expressions and equations, solving linear equations, applying functions to quantitative relationships, and using two and three-dimensional figures to analyze congruence, distance, similarity, and angles. Students at this level should also be able to work with the Pythagorean theorem.

### High School Math Standards

High school math standards in North Dakota emphasize the goal of making students career and college ready. To do this, they emphasize six critical areas:

• Number and quantity:Students learn about quantities, matrix and vector systems, the number system, and complex numbers.
• Functions:This area includes exponential, trigonometric and linear functions.
• Algebra:Students are expected to have a full understanding of polynomials, equations, inequalities, expressions, and radicals.
• Geometry:This content area includes working with plane and solid geometric measurement in figures. Students work with axioms and focus on the properties associated with geometric figures.
• Modeling:Students should apply mathematical principles to real-world situations and decision-making.
• Statistics and Probability:Statistical thinking and data should be used to work out conclusions to problems. Students also work with calculating probabilities.
