NYS Earth Science Regents Exam Information

The New York State (NYS) Regents Exams are a set of five exams that students in the state of New York must pass to graduate from high school. Find out about the Regents Exam in earth science, when it is offered, and how to be ready to do well on it.

Format of the NYS Regents Exam in Earth Science

The Earth Science Regents Exam is one of the tests that, if passed at any time during high school, will qualify as the student's science requirement towards high school graduation.

The exam is three hours long and consists of 85 multiple choice and short answer questions divided into these sections:

Part A35Multiple choice
Part B-115Multiple choice
Part B-215Short answer
Part C20Short answer
  • Questions in Part B-1, Part B-2, and Part C require students to answer queries based on diagrams, charts, short reading passages, and maps found in the test.
  • All students must have access to a calculator, either scientific or four-function, and the current Reference Tables for Physical Setting/Earth Science.

Upcoming Exam Dates

The NYS Regents exams are offered each year in January, June, and August. In 2016, the Regents Earth Science exam is scheduled for January 28 and June 17, with both tests starting at 9:15 a.m. This exam is also administered during the two-day testing period in August.
