Preparing for OAE Test Day
When taking an Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) test, there are several things you can do to ensure that you are ready on test day. These include making some practical preparations in addition to studying thoroughly for your test.
Know Where You're Going
When you scheduled your OAE test you selected a test site. The confirmation email you received from Pearson VUE provides contact information for that test site as well as information about how to get there. It is a good idea to visit the test site before your test day. Determine if there are factors that may affect your transit time, such as roadwork or changes to public transit schedules. It's also a good idea to determine where you can park and what type of payment options you have for parking so that you are prepared on exam day.
Test Site Tour
The OAE website also offers a link to an online test center tour. This is a slide show that takes you through a typical Pearson VUE test site so that you know what to expect on test day.
Know When You Need to Be There
You also selected your test time when you scheduled your exam. Verify this time on the confirmation email and be aware that you are expected to be at the test site no less than 15 minutes before the start of your test. Make sure you factor this into your transit time to determine when to leave for the test site.
Know What to Bring
Everyone taking an OAE test is required to show identification when they get to an exam site. IDs must meet the criteria explained on the OAE website. For example, a social security card is not acceptable because it does not display a person's photo or signature. Military identification and passports are accepted forms of ID because they meet these requirements:
- They were issued by the government
- They display a person's signature
- They display a person's photograph
- They display a person's address
ID must also show a person's name and it must match the name used to register for the test.
Items Permitted by Pearson VUE
There are a number of things you can bring with you that do not require special permission. These items include EpiPens, hearing aids, eyeglasses, inhalers and wheelchairs. A complete list of items allowed in test sites without an accommodations application is provided on the Pearson VUE website.
Items Provided at Test Sites
There are some things that you may need but are not allowed to bring yourself. These items may be provided at Pearson VUE test centers, however, and include the following:
- Noise reducing headphones
Items Allowed with Permission
Individuals who applied for accommodations, including nursing mothers and individuals with medical conditions or disabilities, may be allowed to bring specific items to the test site on exam day. To receive these permissions, you must submit an application and have it approved before scheduling your test. The OAE website explains who may qualify and the steps for submitting an application for testing adjustments.
Know the Rules
There are many items that you aren't allowed to bring into the testing area. These items include cell phones, hats, books, calculators and food. There are additional test site rules that you are expected to follow as well, such as not communicating with other individuals taking an exam. It is important to know what is expected of you on test day so that you comply with all the regulations and do not bring anything to the testing area that you should not have.
Know How the Testing System Works
The OAE website provides a tutorial that you can take to familiarize yourself with the computer-based testing system. Completing this before exam day is a good way to ensure that you are comfortable entering answers to your test questions.
OAE Test Resources
Studying is also part of the preparation process. If you are getting ready to take an OAE test, then consider taking advantage of these materials to help with your review.
There are OAE Study Courses specifically developed for several of the OAE exams. These resources allow you to be confident that you have reviewed all of the information you will be tested on. They contain hundreds of lessons that you can complete online at your convenience.
