Instructor: Shelby Golden
Find information about Ohio's science standards for 6th grade with this article. You can check out what students will learn in this grade and find useful study resources.

Science Theme and Process Standards

6th grade science students will focus on the theme of order and organization. They will be encouraged to consider patterns and trends, structures and relationships. Throughout the school year, students will need to demonstrate the following abilities to ensure they understand what they're learning:

  • Design solutions
  • Demonstrate knowledge
  • Interpret and communicate scientific concepts
  • Recall information

Scientific Tasks

Students can expect to carry out the following tasks in their science classes:

  • Using scientific investigations and asking scientific questions
  • Carrying out scientific experiments
  • Researching, documenting and presenting scientific findings
  • Comparing and contrasting different objects
  • Making charts and other representations of data
  • Using maps and other specific tools, including microscopes, models and more
  • Identifying important information
  • Building models and conducting studies

Many of these activities give students the opportunity for hands-on learning throughout the year. Students will work on all different aspects of science, designing and performing scientific experiments that deal with rocks and soil, the different states of matter and cells. Students will need to be comfortable using scientific tools and completing the mathematical computations involved with scientific inquiries.

These standards carry through from one year of schooling to the next, allowing students to build a solid foundation of scientific knowledge.

Science Content Standards

Throughout the school year, students will also work on studying earth and space, physical and life sciences. Topics covered in each field as well as some supplementary learning resources are presented in the sections below.

Earth and Space Science

Studying this subject involves learning more about the properties and characteristics of minerals and various kinds of rocks as well as the various classifications used for soil and rocks. Students will study soil and its components. They will also explore the uses of minerals, rocks and soil.

Study.com's Middle School Earth Science Course can help students review what they're learning in class. The easy-to-follow lessons in this course deal with the rock cycle, types of rocks and more. Kids can test their understanding with short quizzes.

Physical Science

Classroom time will be spent discussing atoms and changes in the state of matter. Students will develop an understanding of kinetic and potential energy. The relationship between motion, speed and direction will also be considered.

Accessing this Middle School Physical Science Course provides students with a great way to go over the structure of matter, as well as the laws that govern motion. Kids can work at their own pace and review these lessons as many times as they'd like.

Life Science

6th grade life science focuses on helping students understand the functions and importance of cells. Origins of cells are also covered. Work will be done to demonstrate the connection between the structure and function of living systems.

Students who want to put in extra study time can check out this Middle School Life Science Course. This course features numerous quick and engaging videos that can help kids examine the parts of cells and their importance to living creatures. Life science experts are available to answer any questions students have.
