Adult education classes and programs are offered by a variety of schools and colleges throughout Orange County. Read on to learn about the types of programs available for adult learners.

North Orange County Community College District's School of Continuing Education (SCE)

Career Development and College Prep Certificate Programs

SCE offers non-credit certificate programs in 10 areas to help adults improve their basic academic and English language skills, and train for the workplace. These include:

  • GED preparation and literacy development
  • Braille transcription
  • Management and office administration
  • Computer applications, web and design skills, and Office applications
  • Construction, contracting and electrical training
  • Early childhood education
  • Electronics
  • ESL
  • Employability training for disabled students
  • Medical assistance, pharmacy tech, and medical device quality assurance management

High School Program

SCE's high school program allows adults to earn their high school diploma or prepare for the GED by taking high-school level courses and earning credits.

Older Adults Program

SCE offers an Older Adults Program to encourage lifelong learning among seniors. Classes are available at all SCE campuses and most are free to attend. The program focuses on four categories:

  • Physical and mental activities
  • Creative Arts
  • Business and vocational skills
  • Education

Huntington Beach Adult School

High School Diploma and GED Prep

Huntington Beach Adult School provides two options to help adults earn high school diplomas: an adult high school diploma program, in which students take high school courses online, meet weekly with teachers, and earn credits toward a high school diploma; and prep courses that ready adults for the GED or HiSET test. Both the diploma and GED prep programs are available only at Huntington Beach Adult School's Westminster Mall campus.

Career Training

Adults may take individual courses to improve their workplace skills, or enroll in professional certificate programs to train for specific careers. Individual courses include a range of computer training classes, along with a Career Readiness Skills course that covers topics such as job applications, customer service skills, and appropriate workplace attire. Additionally, certificate programs are offered for adults wishing to pursue careers as pharmacy technicians, office clerks, medical assistants, medical billing and coding specialists or administrative assistants.

Personal Enrichment and Fitness

A variety of community classes are available for both adults and seniors at Huntington Beach Adult School. Courses include arts and crafts, culinary arts, photography, communication, CPR training, yoga and aerobics.

Career and Technical Training at Orange County Colleges

Many colleges throughout the county also offer adult career and technical training courses and programs that lead to professional certificates. A few options are:

Santa Ana College Office administration, customer service, computer repair, and vocational construction technology.
Golden West College Business, computer applications and computer science, cosmetology, criminal justice, floral design, automotive, design, digital media and arts, interpreting, Computer Aided Design & Drafting (CADD), and environmental science.
Coastline Community College Business, computers and technology, management, paralegal, and real estate, among many others.
