Praxis Tests Required in Alaska

Alaska uses several Praxis tests to certify teachers. All teachers in Alaska are required to take a basic skills test, either the Praxis test or another approved test. If you want to teach in Alaska, you must also take Praxis content tests designed for the grade level or subject area you're planning to teach.

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) in Alaska

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test evaluates an applicant's basic skills. It consists of three subtests.

Praxis Subtest Name and Test Code Required Passing Score
Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading (5712) 156
Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing (5722) 162
Core Academic Skills for Educators: Mathematics (5732, 5733) 150

Ensure that you send your test scores to the Teacher Certification Office with the code 7027. You can also send your Examinee Score Report.

All teacher certification applicants in Alaska need to pass the Praxis Core or a suitable alternative basic skills test approved by the state of Alaska to fulfill this requirement. For example, qualifying test scores from ACT, SAT, and GRE exams may meet the requirement. Also, several other states' basic exams are accepted, such as California, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, and Florida.

Praxis Subject Assessments for Alaska

All teachers in Alaska must pass a Praxis II test that evaluates their content knowledge. These tests are designed for the appropriate grade levels and the content subjects that an applicant plans to teach. The following tables provide you with the name of the certification, the corresponding Praxis exam, and the required passing score as determined by the State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. Some relevant, additional information is included as it pertains to some of the major teaching certifications and Praxis tests.

In Alaska, early childhood and elementary teachers need to take one of three elementary education Praxis tests to qualify for certification.

The Elementary Education: Content Knowledge test is a two-hour test that is divided into four sections covering mathematics, science, social science and reading and language arts. In order to pass this test, it is necessary to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the four key subject areas that are taught in elementary school.

The Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Praxis test takes 130 minutes to complete and covers five subject areas. In addition to the primary subjects of mathematics, science, social studies and reading and language arts, this Praxis test has a section covering art, music and physical education. This test looks at whether an applicant has sufficient knowledge to teach the subject areas identified at the elementary school level and also assesses an applicant's ability to teach these subjects. Applicants will be required to demonstrate that they can produce a curriculum plan and understand how to instruct students effectively.

The Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test is comprised of four subtests. The four subtests take three and a half hours to complete and cover mathematics, science, social studies and reading and language arts. Like the other elementary education tests, the objective is to ensure that only applicants who have sufficient content knowledge in the four subject areas qualify to teach elementary students.

Middle school teachers in Alaska have the option of taking a general Middle School: Content Knowledge test or a Praxis test that is intended for middle school teachers specializing in a specific subject area.

The Middle School: Content Knowledge test is designed to assess an applicant's level of knowledge in mathematics, science, history, social studies, literature and language studies. It contains 120 questions that are presented in selected-response format, and applicants have two hours to complete the test.

Almost half of the Middle School English Language Arts test assesses applicants' reading skills. The test also looks at their writing, speaking, listening and language use skills. While these parts of the test focus on establishing that applicants have enough knowledge of the subject area, 25% of the test focuses on their ability to teach English language arts effectively.

The Middle School Mathematics test primarily focuses on assessing applicants' algebra and arithmetic skills as well as their skills with geometry and data. The test will also establish that applicants can apply mathematical reasoning skills to their work.

Topics such as life sciences, physical sciences and earth and space sciences are covered in the Middle School Science test. Applicants are also tested on their knowledge of the principles of matter and energy and the scientific process. Test takers will need to show that they know how to apply problem-solving skills to science questions effectively.

A quarter of the Middle School Social Studies test involves writing three essays related to U.S. and world history, geography, economics or government/civics. The remaining 75% of the test includes selected-response questions covering these topics.
