Florida Licensure: FTCE Exams
Florida's Department of Education has its own exams, the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE), which are used to qualify teachers for licensure.
Teachers can first receive a temporary certificate and then seek a professional certificate, which is valid for five years and can be renewed. Candidates will need to demonstrate mastery in general knowledge, their subject area, and professional competence. These three areas can be assessed through the following FTCE tests:
- General knowledge: FTCE General Knowledge test
- Designated subject area: Subject-specific FTCE test
- Professional preparation and education competence: FTCE Professional Education test
Florida Licensure Reciprocity: Praxis Exams
Since numerous states utilize the Praxis examinations as part of their process to approve teachers for licensure, Florida accepts the Praxis test scores through reciprocity agreements. Candidates who took Praxis exams to become certified educators in another state can still use their credentials to earn professional certification in Florida, provided their credentials are current and are equivalent to the Florida professional certificate for which they are applying.
In some cases, however, out-of-state candidates may still be required to take an FTCE test. Candidates who have an expired certificate, for instance, would need to pass the appropriate FTCE tests after obtaining a temporary teaching certificate.
Common Praxis Tests
Each state has unique requirements regarding the Praxis exams and scores needed to qualify for licensure. Generally, we can distinguish between the Praxis I Core Academic Skills for Educators (Praxis Core) and the Praxis II Subject Assessments (Praxis Subject Assessments).
The Praxis Core is often a prerequisite to beginning a teacher education program or is otherwise required to demonstrate general knowledge and qualify for licensure. There are two versions of the Praxis Core, but both consist of three subtests in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. You can take the subtests individually or altogether in a combined test, and you must meet the passing score for each subtest.
The Subject Assessments are a broad set of tests that evaluate candidates according to the grade level and/or content area in which they seek licensure. For example, there are Praxis Subject Assessments for early childhood education, elementary education K-6, secondary school subjects (English language arts, general science, biology, social science, world history), and P-12 subjects (music, art, physical education). Plus, there are tests for special education, world languages, and career and technical subjects.
Although Florida does not use the Praxis assessments to license teachers, there are still numerous testing locations that offer the Praxis, among other standardized tests. For example, students or residents in Florida may plan to seek work out-of-state, necessitating them to complete Praxis exams.
