Praxis Tests in Mississippi

Which Praxis Tests Are Required in Mississippi?

To teach in Mississippi, Praxis tests are required of all candidates. Which tests you must take depends on a couple of factors: did you graduate from a teacher education program or are you an alternate route candidate? The tracks are different for each of these groups.

There are 3 types of tests involved in the licensing process including the Praxis Core Exams, the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exams, and the Subject Area Specific Exams. You might not need to take all 3 types as the track is different for education program students and alternate route candidates.

Praxis Core Exams for Alternate Route Candidates in Mississippi

Alternate route teacher candidates must pass the Core tests to obtain their teaching license. Students who completed a teacher education program do not need to take the core tests for licensure.

Teacher education programs require that education students pass the Core tests or qualify for the institution's ACT qualifying score (see your institution's admissions requirements for more information) prior to entering the program. Therefore, if you have already graduated from a traditional teacher education program, you have fulfilled this requirement and do NOT need to take the Core tests.

The Core tests cover mathematics, reading, and writing. You may select to take each exam separately or take a lengthier combined test including all three areas. Either way, you must pass each component of the Core exams to qualify for certification.

Beginning September 1, 2019:

Core Reading 5713 TBA
Core Writing 5723 TBA

Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Exams: Teacher Education Program Graduates

Praxis Scoring & Reporting in Mississippi

If your test includes only Selected Response (SR) questions, you can view unofficial scores at the end of your testing session. However, sometimes further analysis is needed and scores will not be available upon completion of the test.

If you test in the state of Mississippi, your score report will be sent automatically to the Mississippi Department of Education. If you test outside of the state, be sure to choose the Mississippi Department of Education (state code 7599) as a score recipient when you register. If time has passed since you've taken your test, you may also want to make an additional score report request and notate the state code.

Mississippi requires a Social Security number (SSN) to complete certification paperwork. Therefore, you will be asked for your SSN at the time of registration and this information will be forwarded to the Mississippi Department of Education. If you do not provide your SSN, your application could be delayed.

Official scores will also be available in your online MyPraxis account. For tests offered continuously, such as the Core and PLT exams, scores will most likely be posted 1 - 3 weeks after your test date. For subject area exams, scores will typically be available 2 - 3 weeks after the testing window closes. Scores are available digitally for ten years after the score reporting date.
