The Praxis School Psychologist test covers topics in four major content areas to determine proficiency. These include:

  • Professional practices
  • Direct and indirect services for children, families and schools
  • Systems-level services
  • Foundations of school psychological service delivery

Some of the topics in professional practices include determining if an applicant is able to identify and assess problems based on information disclosed through verbal and non-verbal cues, using behavioral and academic performance assessments affectively, and using consultation and collaboration skills to evaluate interventions.

The direct and indirect services for children, families and schools portion of the test determines if an applicant can appropriately identify issues that could affect a student such as a disability or cultural factors. The applicant must also understand how to provide options that could accommodate students to allow them to reach their academic goals.

The systems-level services portion of the exam allows applicants to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to respond and manage crisis situations through intervention with the use of services such anti-bullying programs and suicide prevention programs.

Finally, the foundations of school psychology services portion of the exam tests an applicant's knowledge of the legal and ethical principles that govern school psychology.
