Praxis Test Requirements for South Dakota

South Dakota requires all beginning teacher certification applicants to pass a pedagogy Praxis. They must also pass a subject-area or grade-level Praxis that evaluates their understanding of the subject matter they will teach and their ability to effectively instruct students.

Pedagogy Praxis Tests for South Dakota

Aspiring teachers may choose to take the Praxis Performance Assessment of Teachers (PPAT) or the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam.

PPAT

The PPAT is a task-based assessment that is completed at the same time as student teaching or clinical experience requirements. It includes 4 tasks:

  1. Knowledge of Students and the Learning Environment
  2. Assessment and Data Collection to Measure and Inform Student Learning
  3. Designing Instruction for Student Learning
  4. Implementing and Analyzing Instruction to Promote Student Learning

PLT Tests

The PLT tests are designed to assess an applicant's understanding of how students learn and how to effectively teach them. All of the PLT tests are two hours long and include both selected-response questions, which can be true or false questions or multiple-choice questions, and constructed-response questions. There are 4 PLT tests designed to qualify individuals to teach specific grade levels. The 4 tests are:

Early Childhood Education Test

Teachers must take the 150-minute Education of Young Children exam in order to achieve the Early Childhood Regular Education certification.

Elementary Education Tests

South Dakota splits elementary education into two age groups: K-4th grade and 5th-8th grade.

The certification types you can obtain in order to teach these grade levels are outlined below. There are multiple test options for each certification area. Those who take subject-area tests, such as the math Praxis exam, are expected to have a degree and knowledge in their chosen field.

K-4th Grade

You can earn a certification as a self-contained K-4th grade teacher, or you can get certified in a specific subject area. For an endorsement area, you can choose from English language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies. For each endorsement, you can take a subject specific exam, a multiple subjects subtest for your chosen subject area, or a general age-level Praxis test.

These tests are designed to ensure that an applicant understands the subject that they will teach. They also look at an applicant's ability to teach the specific subject. Tests vary in length and content. They could last anywhere from 2 to 3 hours and can include multiple-choice questions as well as constructed-response questions.

Praxis Subject Assessments for South Dakota

Praxis subject assessments are required to teach subjects like art, music, physical education, and special education. There are also subject assessments for career and technical education programs, such as agriculture, finance, marketing, and information technology.

World languages Praxis tests are designed to ensure that applicants can speak and write their chosen language. Applicants must also demonstrate they have the ability to understand the language when it's presented to them orally.
