RICA Test Registration & Costs

Registration Process for RICA Exams

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) website has a user account system that allows individuals to schedule the written Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) or request registration packets for the video test. The registration process will be slightly different, depending on which exam format you intend on taking.

Registering for the Written Exam

If you opt to take the written exam, you must select a test site, date, and time. There are several steps you must follow to register.

Step 1: Create An Account

You are required to provide personal information, such as your name, email address, and phone number. Additional information, such as an account password, is also required.

Step 2: Select a Test Site and Time

If you do not know where the test site closest to you is, you can use an online app on the Pearson VUE website that allows you select which test you want to take and input a zip code, street address, or town name (www.pearsonvue.com). Once you input the relevant location information, the app will produce a list of test sites closest to that location.

Pearson VUE also has an app for identifying potential test dates. The first action in this process involves selecting the RICA written examination option. The next thing you need to do is input the location information. You can select up to 3 test sites before moving to the third action, which is to select an available test date from the calendars shown for each test site. Once you select an available test date, a list of possible start times on that date will be shown. Identify the time and date of the exam that suits your schedule.

Step 3: Pay the Registration Fee Online

You must pay the registration fee for the test through your online account. Credit, debit, and check cards are all acceptable forms of payment.

Step 4: Schedule Your Exam

Through your online account, you can choose the ''Schedule'' option, select your exam date and start time, and secure a spot for your chosen testing appointment.

Step 5:

Make sure you receive a confirmation email from Pearson VUE that indicates the date, time, and location of your scheduled exam.

Video Exam Registration

The video exam has limited submission deadlines for all video materials. For example, the three deadlines during the 2017-2018 school year are November 3, 2017; March 16, 2018; and June 15, 2018.

Step 1: Select an Exam Review Date

If you choose the video format, you must decide which of the submission deadlines you want to shoot for so you can indicate it on your registration form. This decision will also determine when you get your test results.

Step 2: Order a Registration Form

You can request a registration form on the CTC website's page about the RICA video exam (www.ctcexams.nesinc.com). Registration forms are sent out through the mail.

Step 3: Submit Registration and Registration Fee

Complete the form for registration. You must mail it in with a cashier's check or money order for the registration fee. The video exam has an annual deadline for registration. For example, during the 2017-2018 school year, the deadline is June 1. After that time, individuals must wait until the next school year to schedule their video exam.

RICA Exam Costs

Individuals taking the written exam pay a registration fee of $171.

Those taking the video exam are required to pay an $80 registration fee when signing up for their exam. They have the option of paying $20 to have their registration materials sent through express delivery. When they submit their video exam, they must also include the $91 submission fee.

Additional Fees

Individuals may opt to incur additional test-related fees. There is a $10 charge for getting an extra copy of your test results. If you dispute your test scores, you can pay a $50 fee for score verification.

In the event that individuals have an account issue, such as insufficient funds through a bank card account or a disputed credit card, they may need to pay a $20 fee to clear their accounts.
