Several schools and organizations in Sarasota offer adult education services for individuals seeking basic education and literacy training, professional development, or personal enrichment. Read on to discover the classes and programs available.

Suncoast Technical College

Suncoast Technical College offers several different adult education programs for students wishing to earn their high school diplomas, learn the English language, gain life skills, or develop their professional skills. Programs include:

  • Adult High School provides classes to adults who have left high school and need around four credits or less to earn their diplomas. This program is also available to high school students who are at least 16 years old and need to recover credits or are at risk of dropping out.
  • ESOL classes are offered at the beginner through advanced levels to help adults develop their English language literacy, prepare for employment, and ready themselves to take their U.S. citizenship tests.
  • GED prep courses can be taken by any adult who is not enrolled in high school.
  • The Academy for Community Transition provides courses and work experience to adults with disabilities who are 18 to 21 years old. The program emphasizes adult living, communication, and career readiness skills.
  • Continuing education is offered to help professionals improve their job skills and meet educational requirements to maintain professional licensure. Programming focuses on fields such as computers, business, early childhood education, healthcare, and cosmetology.

State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota (SCF)

SCF provides a variety of continuing education options for adults, including a special program for those over 50, at its Sarasota county campus in Venice. Offerings include:

  • Personal enrichment courses cover such subjects as the arts, technology, writing, foreign languages, health, and personal finance.
  • Professional development classes and prep courses prepare students for professional certifications in such career fields as construction, computer technology, event planning, insurance, human resources, and healthcare.
  • English courses help adults at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of English language learning improve their skills in preparation for post-secondary study.
  • Encore 50+ is an educational program to help students who are 50 or older develop the skills needed in today's workforce and prepare for new career opportunities.

Pierian Spring Academy (PSA)

PSA provides continuing education options for adults, with an emphasis on the senior community. Courses, which typically meet once a week for a month or more, feature small class sizes. Programming focuses on 16 subject areas, including the arts, writing and literature, technology, history, politics, and current issues.

Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning (SILL)

The non-profit SILL offers lectures and seminars for adult learners interested in the subjects of music and global issues. Global issues programs cover current topics, such as foreign policy, military budgeting, and humanitarian crises. Music programs, meanwhile, feature high-profile musical professionals, such as conductors, musicians, artistic directors, and composers. Programming is open to all adults.

Online Adult Education Options offers dozens of online adult education courses for those wishing to improve their language skills, earn professional certification, update their career skills, or earn their high school diplomas. All online courses are self-paced, so adults may study whenever and wherever they wish. Courses include:

  • A GED Prep Course helps adults master all the topics covered on the GED tests. The course features short lessons and self-assessment tests so students may keep track of their progress.
  • Foreign Language Courses are available to both English language learners and adults wishing to learn a foreign language. Courses include ESL, TOEFL prep, and basic French and Spanish.
  • Professional Development Courses are for adults looking to improve their career skills and prepare for professional certification in a variety of fields.
