Biology Standards in South Carolina

South Carolina science standards for biology start at high school. Students work on developing science and engineering skills, and the science standards created by the state and the U.S. Department of Education integrate crosscutting concepts that incorporate topics from other science disciplines, such as chemistry and physics, into a biology class.

Biology class must include laboratory time that allows students to develop hands-on knowledge, and students need to demonstrate specific performance skills and knowledge for each standard applicable to biology. Additionally, students in this class need to complete an end-of-course examination.

Biology I Content Standards

Biology students work to understand systems of cells, heredity, biological evolution, energy transfer and the dynamics of ecosystems. They learn about cellular chemical reactions that involve molecules and enzymes. They consider the importance of cells, as well as cellular substructures. Students also study viruses, cellular transport, cellular division, embryonic development and cellular differentiation.

Students focus on how cells transform energy. They'll also learn about the structure of DNA, the information DNA holds, the role of RNA and biotechnology. Sex cells and meiosis will be discussed. Students consider possible problems with DNA replication.

The components involved in an ecosystem will be discussed, along with the carbon cycle. Students learn about ecosystem stability and the importance of biodiversity. Additionally, they'll consider how humans have effected biodiversity.

Biology Science and Engineering Practices

In a biology course in this state, students are expected to ask questions that lead to scientific investigations. They'll work with models, carry out scientific investigations and come up with scientific explanations. They'll also learn to find and use information from a variety of sources and employ math skills to analyze data or understand variables. Biology students need to use scientific arguments, build scientific devices and come up with solutions based on their scientific knowledge. Finally, students need to ensure they can communicate effectively and take part in scientific arguments.

These practices should be interwoven with the biology concepts students are working on, allowing them to work on building their scientific skills while they increase their content knowledge.

Crosscutting Concepts

Biology students also need to know about certain concepts that stretch across different scientific study areas. These valuable concepts can be applied in a number of ways, and include:

  • Patterns and relationships
  • Stability and rates of change
  • Cause and effect relationships
  • Structure, shape, and function
  • Energy cycles and changes in matter
  • Systems and their boundaries and models
  • Scale, proportion and quantity changes

As with the science and engineering principles, these concepts will be incorporated into the biology content covered throughout the course.
