Fremont Union High School District Adult School, Sunnyvale-Cupertino (FUHSD Adult School)

FUHSD Adult School offers a wide array of classes and programs to meet adult learning goals, ranging from basic education and ESL to career and personal enrichment. Programs include:

  • Active Adults 50+. Offered at several locations throughout Sunnyvale and neighboring Cupertino, the Active Adults 50+ program provides courses designed for older adults and seniors. Courses are offered in nine categories: language, art, computers, conversational English, special interests, physical fitness, music and dance, home arts, and finance.
  • Adult Secondary Education. Designed for adults who do not have a high school diploma, the Adult Secondary Education program provides individualized educational plans that prepare students to either take the GED test or earn an Adult High School diploma. Each student meets with a transition team specialist and determines a plan of study based on his or her prior educational experience, placement test performance, and career goals.
  • Adult Basic Education. Adults who need to develop their basic academic skills may take FUHSD Adult School's adult basic education Bridge to the Future courses. Instruction is available in reading, math, writing, vocabulary, study skills, test taking, and job readiness.
  • Career Education. A variety of courses and programs are offered to help adults develop their job skills or train for new careers. Class offerings include computers and technology, medical career skills, property management, CPR, and first aid. Certificate programs are available for those pursuing careers as certified nursing assistants and certified home health aides.
  • Citizenship. Adults who are preparing to become U.S. citizens may take FUHSD Adult School's citizenship classes for assistance with their citizenship application and interview, and to learn about U.S. history, government and citizens' rights.
  • Community Interest. This program offers more than 160 personal enrichment courses for adults of all ages. Classes are available in areas such as arts and crafts, cooking, music and dance, home arts, finance and physical fitness.
  • English as a Second Language. Free daytime and evening ESL classes are available for English language learners at a variety of skill levels. Students must take a placement test before enrolling in classes.
  • Parent Education. Adults with preschool-aged children may enroll in Bright Beginnings, a preschool and parent education program in which parents observe and participate in the school setting, and meet with instructors to learn about child development.

Mission College Community Education

Located about 6 miles from Sunnyvale, Mission College offers several education options for area adults:

  • Personal Enrichment. Adults wishing to develop their musical and artistic skills will find a variety of learning opportunities through Mission College's Community Education department. Offerings include workshops such as furniture design and metalsmithing, and beginner through advanced violin courses.
  • Career training. Mission College offers several online-only career training programs, along with an intensive in-person professional training certificate program for adults wishing to become pharmacy technicians. The pharmacy tech program takes 30 weeks to complete and includes classes, lab sessions, practical experience in a pharmacy, workshops, and tutoring.

De Anza College Workforce Education

De Anza College, which is approximately 4 miles from Sunnyvale, offers more than 30 career-training programs to help adults improve their job skills or prepare for new careers. These programs, which range from 6 to 24 months in length and typically include internships, result in either a professional certificate or degree. Workforce Education programs are offered in areas such as business, automotive technology, healthcare, real estate, paralegal, computers and technology, journalism, and photography.
