Texas Elementary School Science Standards

Elementary schoolers in Texas will be developing a foundational understanding of the sciences. They can check out these science lessons for kids for help in these grades:


Kindergartners will consider observable patterns and problems in their world. They'll learn about the properties of objects around them and focus on the effects of heat and cold. Kinds of energy will be discussed, along with movement, rocks, natural water bodies, daily weather changes and the needs of living creatures. They'll also consider the parts and life cycle of plants.

1st Grade

Students will compare and classify objects. They'll learn about magnets, soil, weather information, celestial objects, the seasons and wind. Kids will also study living and nonliving things, the interdependence of living organisms and characteristics and life cycles of animals.

2nd Grade

In this grade, students will classify matter and learn about physical properties. They'll focus on patterns of movement, resources, the water cycle, patterns of celestial objects, the needs of living things, characteristics of plants and animals and the life cycles of insects.

3rd Grade

Solids, liquids, gases and mixtures will be considered. Students will learn about different types of energy, magnetism, gravity, the formation of soil, changes to Earth's surface and landforms. Time will be spent studying the Sun, Earth, Moon and other planets. Food chains, environmental issues and inherited traits will be discussed.

4th Grade

Students will learn about the states of water, mixtures and solutions. They'll consider insulators, conductors, electricity, force, weathering, erosion, resources, the water cycle and patterns in the natural world. Students will study the importance of sunlight, adaptations and connections between parents and offspring.

5th Grade

5th graders will learn about important points on the Celsius scale and consider the physical changes associated with solutions. They'll focus on electrical circuits, light, fossil fuels, alternative energy sources, climate, the movement of the Earth, ecosystems and the carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle. Kids will also study insect metamorphosis.

Texas Middle School Science Standards

Middle schoolers continue to learn more about science. These courses on life, physical and earth science can serve as great study tools for students in:

6th Grade

At this grade level, students will learn about elements, compounds, chemical changes, metals, nonmetals, metalloids and the properties of minerals. They'll consider energy resources, types of energy, energy transfer and energy transformation. The Earth's layers, types of rock, tectonic plates, objects in the solar system, gravity and space exploration will be taught, along with cells, taxonomic classification and parts of ecosystems.

7th Grade

Students will study radiant energy, the matter and energy cycle, organic compounds and the breakdown of large molecules. They'll also focus on the forces that influence motion, catastrophic events, weathering, human impact on water, different environments, biodiversity and ecological succession. Genetic traits, the internal structures of organisms, levels of organization, plant and animal cells and cell theory will be covered. Students will learn about external and internal stimuli, heredity, reproduction and inherited traits.

8th Grade

8th graders will learn about atoms, protons, the Periodic Table, chemical formulas, reactions and equations. They'll study speed, velocity, acceleration, Newton's Law of inertia and the movement of the Earth and Moon. Kids will consider parts of the universe, the electromagnetic spectrum, light years and the origin of the universe. Plate tectonic theory and the effects of weathering will be discussed. Students will focus on atmospheric movement, connections between oceans and the weather, relationships found in food webs, effects of environmental changes on ecosystems and the impact of humanity on oceans.

Texas High School Science Standards

Texas offers various advanced science classes throughout the state, however, in order to graduate from high school, students must take biology, integrated physics and chemistry (IPC) or an advanced science course and another advanced science course (e.g., astronomy, environmental science and aquatic science). Students have a choice of which advanced science courses they will take.


Students will learn about different kinds of cells, cellular processes and viruses. They'll consider the cell cycle, specialized cells, DNA and certain diseases. The genetic code, gene expression, genetic combinations, meiosis and genetic techniques will be covered. Students will also study common ancestry, the fossil record, natural selection and evolutionary mechanisms.

Taxonomy, classification systems and taxonomic groups will be focused on, along with biomolecules, photosynthesis, cellular respiration and enzymes. Students will find out more about system interactions, homeostasis, microorganisms, species diversity and the movement of matter and energy in an ecosystem.

Integrated Physics and Chemistry

In this class, students will learn about distance, speed, motion, force, mass, acceleration, the conservation of momentum, gravitational attraction and electrical force. They'll also study kinetic energy, other kinds of energy, the conservation of energy, waves and energy conversions. Chemical and physical properties of elements will be considered, along with the structure of water. Chemical changes, the conservation of mass, energy changes, nuclear reactions and results of chemical reactions will also be covered.
