The Flipped Classroom With

Instructor: Janette Nikolakopoulos
A busy educator explains how has helped her create a successful and engaging blended learning environment. By using video lessons and quizzes, Ms. Nicholson has reduced her prep time and increased student engagement.

A Teacher's Story

Lauris Nicholson teaches Biology and Anatomy for grades 10-12. She's no stranger to the many challenges teachers face. Her classroom is filled with different types of learners, so she often struggles finding the right content that can reach every individual student. Ms. Nicholson strives to make her classroom a place of blended and adaptive learning, infusing her regular lessons with additional content, which is why she uses

The Benefit of Videos

By using's short animated video lessons as a supplemental resource, Ms. Nicholson successfully flips her classroom. This creates a cohesive, blended learning environment.

''With, my students can easily learn the same topics I cover in class by watching videos. I love that my students can use an additional resource outside of textbook lessons.''

Since technology plays such a huge role in her students' day-to-day, incorporating an online tool into her lesson plans adds context to her teaching methods.

''It's 2016. Finding information online and watching videos is something students do every day, so students can easily wrap their minds around viewing a video lesson and taking a quiz online. They can relate.''

Enhanced Comprehension

Ms. Nicholson shows videos in class to emphasize key concepts covered in lessons. She also assigns videos as homework to give individual students a chance to be familiar with the material before she dives into a class lecture. Since she started flipping her classroom using, Ms. Nicholson sees a change in the way her students engage with the material.

''I have had a positive experience flipping the classroom with I see that students have a better understanding of the material after they watch videos.''

Assess Students Easily

Ms. Nicholson has also found that assigning quizzes after each lesson improves the students' comprehension of the material and ensures that they are fulfilling the assignments. Because each lesson is accompanied with a quiz, teachers don't need to spend time creating the assessment.

'' makes it easy for individual students to master material and for teachers to keep track if they (students) are indeed understanding the material by having access to quiz grades.''

Save Time Planning

The Teacher Plan includes unlimited access to content: over 35,000 text and video lessons that align with Common Core standards and textbook materials. A significant part of lesson planning is finding the right, reliable content, and by having a large resource for supplemental material, much of that planning stress is alleviated. Ms. Nicholson agrees that she ''always finds the content she is looking for'' and this makes planning easier for her. Although she states that flipping a classroom can be a challenge, she thinks the pay-off of a blended learning environment is well worth the effort.
