Utah Science Standards

Instructor: Shelby Golden
This article can help you understand Utah's science standards. You'll also learn about educational resources that can help students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Science Standards in Utah

Utah uses science standards that deal with the scientific concepts students will learn, as well as the scientific skills they will develop throughout their schooling. Students will work on improving their scientific abilities in each grade.

Elementary School Science Standards in Utah

Students in elementary school can check out this course on science for kids to supplement what they're learning in class.

The parts and movement of non-living things will be considered. Day, night and changes in weather will be studied at this grade level. Students will also consider parts of living organisms.

1st Grade

1st graders will learn about rocks, soil, water, the sun, the moon and seasonal weather. Students will discuss the properties of various objects. Connections between parents and offspring, as well as organisms and their environment, will be covered.

2nd Grade

In 2nd grade, students will focus on characteristics of rocks, celestial objects and local weather. How objects fall and the responses of various materials to change will be examined. The needs of living things will be taught.

3rd Grade

Students will learn about the shape of the Earth and its rotation. Connections between living things, nonliving things and the environment will be considered. Kids will explore force, motion, gravity and the importance of the sun.

4th Grade

The water cycle and the elements of weather will be studied in this grade. Students will discuss the properties of rocks, weathering and erosion. They'll learn more about fossils and different environments in Utah.

5th Grade

In this grade, kids will learn about chemical and physical changes. Earthquakes, volcanoes and other factors that affect the surface of the Earth will be covered. Students will find out more about magnetism and electricity. Hereditary traits will be discussed.

Middle School Science Standards in Utah

Students in middle school can check out these courses on physical, life and earth science to reinforce what they're learning in class.

6th Grade

Students will consider the orbit of the moon and the importance of Earth's tilt. Other objects in our solar system, and the universe will be studied. Microorganisms, heat, sound and light will also be focused on in this grade.

7th Grade

7th graders will learn about matter and Earth's structure. They'll consider cells, organs, inherited traits and classification systems for living things.

8th Grade

How matter changes will be covered in this grade. Students will also study the energy found in sunlight, rock formation and fossils. Time will be spent considering energy, motion and force.

High School Science Standards in Utah

High school science standards are divided into classes, instead of by grade level. Students will study:

Earth Science

Theories regarding the formation of the universe will be covered in this class. Students will consider the celestial objects in our solar system, as well as the internal structure of the Earth. The atmosphere and hydrosphere will also be studied. Students can learn about the relationship between society and science. Accessing this earth science course can help students study for this class.

In this class, students will focus on how living creatures deal with each other and the environment they live in. They'll study cells, organs, organ systems, types of reproduction and DNA. Evolutionary processes will also be considered. Students can review their knowledge of biology with this online course.

Students will learn more about atoms, the periodic table, electrons and nuclear reactions. They'll study chemical bonding, chemical reactions and dynamic equilibrium. Solutions, acids and bases will also be taught in this class. The concepts covered in high school chemistry are reviewed in these lessons.

Motion, velocity, acceleration, force and mass will be studied in this class. Students will learn more about gravity and electricity, in addition to the conservation of energy. Class time will also be spent focusing on waves. Students can get the help they need with this physics course. With this resource, students can take practice exams as well as quizzes to identify what concepts they need to spend more time studying.
