What is a Digital Badge?

Instructor: Matt Doyle
Earning a digital badge online is a great way to showcase your accomplishments. But what is a digital badge? Read on to learn more about digital badges, a new type of skill validation.

Digital Badge Basics

A digital badge is a type of award earned online for one or many achievements. A person may earn a digital badge for any action, and the concept is similar to badges awarded in Boy & Girl Scouts. The number of things a person must do to earn a badge vary and are determined by the badge-issuing organization or person. That means a person may earn a badge for watching a single video or completing an entire portfolio of work.

So what do you get when you earn a digital badge? That will depend on the organization or person offering the badge. Many organizations that offer digital badges provide an image file with embedded code that proves the person did what they claim to earn the badge. Since it's up to the organization awarding the badge, be sure to check-out the specifics before you get started. Some examples of requirements for digital badges include:

  • Meeting the learning standards designed by Mozilla for their Open Badges
  • Completing courses and passing a quiz for Open Badges offered by Peaceful Plagrounds
  • Registering and leaving comments or participating in online conferences for the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Oh Freedom badges

Uses for Digital Badges

Like certificates of achievements, digital badges provide valid proof of your accomplishments. This can be useful when you need to demonstrate to others that you've worked towards mastering a certain skill set. This might be useful when talking with prospective employers about the skills you could bring to the job or to current employers about the skills you'd offer if promoted to a new position.

Some websites even allow you to collect your digital badges in a type of online portfolio that you control, making it easy to refer others to your collection of digital badges.

Digital Badge Examples

In many ways, digital badges are like certifications of completion. Once you've finished the requirements, you're presented with the digital badge as proof of your work. Many websites offer valid, digital proof of learning experiences online. For example, Study.com offers certificates of completion for many online courses that you can print or display from your site profile. Check out some of the certificate-eligible courses below:
