Content on the FTCE Professional Education Test

The FTCE Professional Education test focuses on the knowledge required to be a successful teacher. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of topics ranging from curriculum planning and assessment strategies to professional development and Florida's code of ethics.

Test Competencies

The FTCE PEd exam consists of eight domains, also known as competencies. Each competency gauges a candidate's knowledge of a specialized skill set. The competencies, along with the percentage of the exam that they constitute, are as follows:

  • Instructional Design & Planning (18%): These test questions assess test takers' ability to employ a wide range of instructional tasks that have measurable learning outcomes and meet the needs of students with diverse skill levels and backgrounds.
  • Student-Centered Learning Environments (15%): Test takers who do well on these questions have a solid understanding of what it takes to create a supportive learning environment for all students, whether by modeling effective communication skills, managing student behavior, or bringing assistive technologies into the classroom.
  • Instructional Delivery & Facilitation (18%): Questions in this domain focus on the instructional techniques and technologies used to motivate students and develop their knowledge in a given subject area. This domain also covers the implementation of differentiated instructional strategies.
  • Assessment Strategies (14%): These questions measure test takers' ability to not only select assessments appropriate for a particular learning objective or student learning style, but also to interpret data and use it to improve their approaches to instruction.
  • Continuous Professional Improvement (12%): Test takers must demonstrate their understanding of how to set goals for professional development and select the right resources to help reach them. The role of personal reflection in this process is also stressed.
  • Code of Ethics & Principles of Professional Conduct (9%): These questions ensure prospective teachers are aware of their responsibilities for reporting abuse and neglect as well as the laws related to student records and the use of technology.
  • Research-Based Practices for ELL Instruction (7%): Test takers answering these questions need the ability to identify the stages of second language learning among ELL students and modify instructional strategies and resources accordingly.
  • Literacy Strategies (7%): These questions cover the practices teachers can use to develop students' vocabulary, reading comprehension, and critical-thinking skills while providing instruction in their content area.

Format and Length

The PEd test is completed via computer at an approved testing site. Candidates will need to interact with a user interface that is commonplace with most FTCE exams. For an interactive tutorial on how to use this system, consult the FTCE website.

The test itself consists of around 120 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have two hours and 30 minutes to complete the entire examination. The testing period does not include any breaks; candidates may rest if they so desire, but these periods will be counted as part of the testing session.

Passing Score

Like all other FTCE exams, the PEd is graded on a pass-fail basis. Candidates must receive a scaled score of at least 200 in order to pass. Candidates who fail will need to register for a re-take.
