What is the EPT Test?

Instructor: Shelby Golden
Find out what the CSU EPT assessment is and how it is used with this article. You'll learn about the kinds of questions on the test and discover how to prepare for it.

What Does the EPT Do?

California State University (CSU) uses the English Placement Test (EPT) as a tool to determine the language arts classes that incoming students will be ready to take. You will most likely need to complete this exam before you can enroll at CSU.

However, note that not all prospective students need to complete the EPT. You may be able to opt out of the test if you score high enough on other standardized tests. You can check out the exact tests that can be applied through the Electronic Testing Service's (ETS) website (www.ets.org).

What's On the EPT?

The EPT includes 2 multiple-choice sections, one that focuses on reading and one that focuses on composition, and an essay writing section. Each multiple-choice section contains 45 questions. You will have 30 minutes to complete each multiple-choice section and 45 minutes to write your essay.

Essay Section

The essay section of the EPT will require you to read a short argument, analyze it and then reply to it in essay form. You must write your essay about the argument that's presented to you. No other topic will be accepted; in fact, you'll score a 0 if you try to write about something else.

You will be graded on the organization and structure of your essay, as well as your ability to follow the spelling and grammatical conventions of English writing. Make sure you use proper paragraph structure, including a beginning, middle and end, in order to get a good score on this section.

Reading Section

This section will include questions that require you to refer to either a short passage, a sentence or multiple sentences to correctly answer questions. The goal of this portion of the exam is to test your reading comprehension skills.

Composing Section

The questions in this section will measure how well you can apply compositional skills in English. You'll need to be able to restructure sentences, look at several sentences and select the one that is written correctly, fill in missing sentences and identify information that can be used to support various topics.

How Do I Register for the EPT?

You will need to set up an account and register for this exam through the ETS website. The website will also provide you with a list of potential test dates and locations where you can complete the exam.

How Do I Get Ready for the EPT?

You can review the essay writing, reading and compositional skills you'll need to apply to pass the EPT with this EPT Study Guide. This course is self-paced and includes video lessons that allow you to quickly and easily go over the language arts subjects tested by the EPT. You'll be able to work on interactive quizzes that will allow you to get used to answering questions similar to those found on the exam.

CSU also requires most students to complete the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) test. You can access this ELM Study Guide to go over the numerical, algebraic and geometric information you need to know to successfully pass this assessment.
