What is the HESI A2 Admission Assessment Exam?

Who Uses the HESI A2?

The Health Education Systems, Inc. Admissions Assessment (HESI A2) tests are used by colleges and universities throughout the United States as part of their admissions process. While some schools use the HESI A2 for nursing program applicants, other schools also require individuals applying to health sciences programs in areas such as diagnostic medical sonography, nursing, radiologic technology and surgical technology to take variations of the HESI A2. The HESI A2 is also known as the Evolve Reach A2 or HESI.

What's on the HESI A2?

The HESI A2 contains nine different tests in total, but not all test-takers are required to take all of the exams. The tests that make up the HESI A2 are:

  • Anatomy and Physiology - Includes questions on anatomical systems and structures as well as related terminology
  • Basic Math Skills - Assesses basic arithmetic skills and students' understanding of measurements, ratios and proportions
  • Biology - Covers cell and molecular biology, photosynthesis and metabolism, among other topics
  • Chemistry - Tests students' knowledge of such topics as atomic structure and chemical reactions
  • Grammar - Questions cover the parts of speech and assess test-takers' ability to identify grammatical errors
  • Learning Style - Responses to questions are used to determine students' learning styles
  • Personality Profile - Assesses students' learning styles through the use of personality questions
  • Reading Comprehension - Questions about various reading passages measure students' ability to identify main ideas, use words in context and make inferences
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge - Covers commonly used vocabulary words from the health care field and everyday conversation

Common Testing Requirements

The number of HESI A2 tests that postsecondary institutions require applicants to take can range from four to nine. The Basic Math Skills, Reading Comprehension, Grammar and Vocabulary and General Knowledge tests are most commonly required.

The Learning Style and Personality Profile exams are often not required. Some schools do ask applicants to take these exams to help them understand what learning styles suit them best but do not use the results as part of the admissions process.

Due to the variation in the number of tests used by different postsecondary institutions, it is important to review the specific HESI A2 requirements set by the school you are planning to attend. The testing requirements for the A2 can also differ depending on which program you are applying to.

Where Do Individuals Take the HESI A2?

Colleges and universities that use the HESI A2 typically offer testing at their facilities. Individuals who are planning to attend a school that is far from where they currently reside may also be permitted to take the test at a Prometric test center.

What Is the Cost of the HESI A2?

The testing costs vary from location to location. Schools can charge test fees ranging from around $40 to $65 or more. Additional proctoring fees may apply for students who are taking the exam at a school other than the one to which they are seeking admission. Since there is no set price for the HESI A2 exams, individuals must check with the school where they will take the test to confirm their testing fees.
