Instructor: Carrie Soucy
Common Core Standards include an Appendix A for mathematics and an Appendix A for English language arts. Both provide supplemental material to help educators understand these expectations of student learning. Read on to learn more about the appendices and find additional resources useful for implementing Common Core Standards in the classroom.

Mathematics Appendix A

Appendix A of the Common Core mathematics standards contains model course outlines and unit plans designed to guide educators in their creation of coherent high school math curricula. The four models include traditional American and international math course structures that have proven successful in preparing students for college or careers after high school. Each model outlines how the concepts covered will help students achieve Common Core Standards for math as they progress from one grade to the next.

English Language Arts Appendix A

Appendix A of the ELA Common Core Standards provides readers with research used to support standards in the areas of reading, writing, vocabulary, speaking and listening, and English language conventions.

It begins by explaining the importance of developing students' ability to comprehend, critique, and interpret complex texts in order to close the gap between the reading abilities of graduating high school students and the expectations of those graduates when they enter college or the workforce.

The ELA Appendix A also reviews how Common Core Standards measure text complexity, and provides educators with tools to help them implement similar measurements when selecting texts to include in their curricula. Additional resources include definitions of argumentative, explanatory, and narrative writing as well as charts and graphs demonstrating what students' mastery of language and vocabulary skills might look like across each grade level.
