When Should I Take The TEAS Test?

Determining When to Take the TEAS Exam

Individuals take the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) to fulfill admission requirements for some college and university programs. The test is most commonly used as one of the admission criteria for postsecondary nursing programs, although some allied health sciences programs also require individuals to take the TEAS test as part of the application process. Since this test is used to evaluate postsecondary applications, it is important to consider several factors when scheduling your exam.

Test Results Expiration

Your scores on the TEAS test are not valid indefinitely. Colleges and universities have different expiration time frames for TEAS test scores, but they are typically considered valid for between one and two years. Some schools base the expiration date for TEAS test scores off of the date an individual took the test. Other colleges and universities begin counting the period of test score eligibility from a test-taker's program application date.

It is essential that you check with the college or university you are applying to and make sure you know how long the school considers TEAS test results valid.

Program Application Deadlines

You will need to ensure that you can take your TEAS test and have your scores reported in time to meet application deadlines. It is a good idea to check on the application deadlines for the college or university programs you are considering and then factor in a week for receiving TEAS test results. Some institutions recommend scheduling your test no less than 15 days prior to the application deadline.

Course Requirements

If you're still in high school and need to take the TEAS exam, you may be concerned about having as much time as possible to complete courses before taking the exam so you have covered the information you will be tested on. In this case, you may want to wait until January of your senior year so that you have completed as much of your required high school courses as possible. Or, you may opt to take the test in December of your senior year so that you have the ability to retake the test if necessary.

If the program admission requirements at your college or university include prerequisite general education courses, you'll also want to get those out of way before sitting for your TEAS test.

Allowing for Retakes

If you have test anxiety or any reason to be concerned about possibly failing the TEAS test on your first attempt, then you may want to ensure that you take the test even earlier and allow enough time to retake the exam if you do not pass. Academic institutions have different policies about taking the TEAS a second time, so it is important to carefully review the TEAS retake policy for the schools you're planning to apply to before you schedule your test.

Some schools limit applicants to two testing attempts within a one-year period. There are also postsecondary institutions that impose a waiting period of 30 days before a person can retake the TEAS test. If you're concerned about the possibility of retaking the test, consider scheduling your first test attempt at least 46 days prior to your application deadline. This allows a full 30 days to elapse after your initial test date and adds in the recommended 15-day minimum time frame for testing before the application deadline.
