Why Learn Spanish?

Instructor: Adam Nystrom

The benefits of learning Spanish are far greater than you may think. As you consider the idea of studying this language, read on to find out a few reasons why it's a great idea.

You'll Be An Asset to Your Company

As of 2011, 37.6 million people consider Spanish to be their first language in the United States, and according to predictions, that number will more than triple by 2060, according to Business Insider. With so many people not using English as their native tongue, there will be higher demand every year for employees in all kinds of jobs that can speak more than English. From something as simple as translating how to sell a product, to acting as a liaison between companies, having the ability to speak Spanish will be priceless as businesses continue to expand across the globe. In fact, you can make an entire career out of being a translator, and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 29% increase in interpreter and translator jobs over the 2014-2024 decade.

You'll Expand Your Intellect

Imagine your favorite film in the Spanish language. You've probably watched it with subtitles, or even watched a version with voice actors dubbing over the native language. Now imagine what it would be like to fully absorb the linguistics by the actors, watching how their facial expressions accent their words without having to focus on the subtitles every few seconds. As you advance, you'll be able to do the same with books, and completely understand the author's intentions without the use of a translation.

Your Travels Will Be Better

Going to a foreign land where Spanish is the primary language is doable with a pocket guide to the language, or memorizing a few key phrases to get you to and from important points like airports, hotels and restaurants. Of course, if you understand what you are saying, you'll be able to discover a world unknown to the usual tourists, finding hidden treasures of food and culture that would elude those who don't speak a word of Spanish.
