Science Standards in Wyoming

Wyoming is currently using science standards that were last updated in 2008. However, as of 2016, a standards review committee has been working to consider and adjust these standards. Changes may occur shortly. Wyoming's current science standards fall into three main content domains: concepts and processes, which span earth and space, life systems and physical systems; science as inquiry; and the nature and history of science in personal and social decisions.

Science as Inquiry Standards in Wyoming

Students at all grade levels work to answer questions that deal with science and complete simple investigations. They demonstrate the ability to make use of science and safety equipment. Additionally, students learn to research and then communicate what they've found. They study ways that science and technology work together.

History and Nature of Science in Personal and Social Decisions Standards in Wyoming

Ways that scientific thought shifts throughout time are discussed within each grade. All students work on understanding science issues in their area, as well as potential solutions to these problems. Furthermore, ways that scientific knowledge can influence decisions will be discussed. Students study the conservation of resources on a local level, as well as on a larger scale. They also consider ways that science can help solve major problems.

Science Concepts and Processes Standards in Wyoming

These standards deal with the specific scientific knowledge concepts that students learn in class, and vary by level.

Kindergarten - 4th Grade

Students in these grades are just beginning their scientific studies. They can get help ensuring they have a solid foundational knowledge by checking out this science for kids course.

In these grades, students learn about the life cycles and observable characteristics of both plants and animals. They consider how parents and their offspring are alike. Furthermore, students examine the relationship that exists between living organisms and the environment they live in.

Students focus on the properties of earth materials, including rocks and soil, in addition to studying water and the air. They learn about celestial objects, along with changes that include seasonal weather shifts.

The properties that can be used to classify objects and the changes associated with heat and cold are discussed. Kids also consider sound, light, electricity, magnetism and the effects of both pulling and pushing.

5th - 8th Grade

As students continue to work on the sciences, they can review what they're learning with these middle school courses in life, physical and earth science.

Students in these grades learn about the importance of cells and reproduction to the survival of a species. The theory of evolution, ways that organisms interconnect with one another and biological adaptations will be covered.

Time is spent studying the position of Earth and ways that the sun influences our solar system. They also focus on Earth's layers, plate movements and the history of our planet.

Students receive instruction regarding the properties of matter, as well as both chemical and physical changes. Kids work on understanding the conservation of energy and matter. Additionally, they learn how to describe motion.

9th - 12th Grade

High schoolers can check out these courses in biology, physical science and earth science while they study.

Students in high school learn about different types of reproduction and the metabolic processes of cells. They study molecular biology and consider the ways that species evolve. The energy needs of living systems and the factors that influence the behavior of living creatures are also covered in class.

Earth's spheres and the way energy is used in each of them will be studied in high school. Additionally, students develop an understanding of geologic time and the Big Bang theory.

High schoolers learn about atomic structures and subatomic particles. They also spend time studying chemical bonding and chemical reactions. Different forms of energy, ways that energy can be transformed and Newton's scientific laws are also covered.
