Read the following passage, then identify the effect for Patrick's hard work prior to football tryouts.

''Patrick always loved the idea of joining his school's football team. The team is very competitive and tryouts are difficult. The coaches only choose the best athletes to join the team. Patrick knew he would have to work really hard in preparing for upcoming tryouts. Each day after school, Patrick did his homework, then went right outside to train with his dad. He ran laps, practiced throwing the football, and lifted weights. On the weekends, when his friends invited him to play video games, Patrick would stay home and work at perfecting his football skills. Finally, when the day for try-outs came, Patrick showed the coaches all he could do. The coaches were impressed with him and could tell he had been working hard to prepare, so they invited him to join the team. Patrick knew his hard work would pay off.''
