This lesson will explore the slow decline of the Byzantine Empire. It will highlight internal instability and outside invasion as two of the major factors that led to the 1453 fall of Constantinople and the empire.

In this lesson, we explore the Christian Church in the Byzantine Empire, and the history of the issues the bishop in Constantinople had with other Christian bishops, especially in Rome.

4. Islamic Civilization & Society
Before the year 600, the Middle East was a no man's land between Persia and Byzantium. Then, 100 years later, it was the heartland of an empire that would grow larger than its predecessors put together. This lesson details the changes to society during that time.

5. The Spread of Islam and the Progress of the Caliphates
After the death of Mohammed, Islam continued to spread through Arabia, the Middle East and Africa. This lesson is an overview of Islam's progress from the faith of Mecca to a faith for all the world.

6. Cultural Elements that Unified the Islamic World
Despite stretching from Morocco to the Philippines, the Islamic world managed to maintain a surprising amount of cultural coherence during the Middle Ages.

7. The Arab-Islamic Empire: Emergence, Establishment & Expansion
This lesson will trace the emergence of the Arab-Islamic Empire. It will focus on the Islamic faith, the rule of Abu Bakr, and the Golden Age of Islam under the Abbasid Dynasty.
