About This Chapter

Find lessons for eighth grade English. The following lessons meet the Common Core Reading Literature standard for analyzing elements in different mediums (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.7).

Standard: Analyze the extent to which a filmed or live production of a story or drama stays faithful to or departs from the text or script, evaluating the choices made by the director or actors. (CCSS.ELA.LITERACY.RL.8.7).

About This Chapter

Students who achieve mastery of this standard can read different texts or scripts and view the corresponding film or live version. They can identify critical aspects of the text, such as the main plot, character descriptions or sequence of events, and determine how closely the film version followed those concepts. Using their knowledge of the plot and central theme of a text, they can analyze the decisions made by the film's directors or actors to stay close to the text or branch out from it.

Some of the concepts covered in these lessons include:

  • Comparing and contrasting a book or other text to its movie or live action version
  • Determining if the meaning of a story changed in the film or live version
  • Analyzing changes made to the book version by directors or actors

Students show that they have mastered this standard when they can assess the motivations behind changes made to a story by a director or actor. They are knowledgeable about the book version and can explain whether the changes made were intentional or unintentional. Students with mastery of this standard can compare the events and themes of the book version with those of the film version and decide if the changes made in the film altered the meaning of the original story.

How to Use These Lessons in Your Classroom

Here are some tips for how to use these lessons to support instruction in the standard:

Finding Differences in Book and Movie Versions of a Story

Assign students to read a book that has a corresponding film version. Watch the lessons on film versus text versions of a story in class and follow-up with an in-class viewing of the film version of the selected book. Ask students to take notes during the movie about similarities and differences they found between the two mediums. Lead a class discussion on the changes that students found and the concepts that remained the same.

Analyzing the Reasons for Changes Made to Book Versions

Watch lessons on film versus text versions of a story in class and assign students to read a story that has a corresponding film version. Create a series of questions that students can answer while reading the book. Ask them to identify the theme and main point of the story, roles of specific characters and timeline of events. Watch the movie version in class. Lead a discussion on how the meaning and themes from the original book version were changed in the movie version. Have students formulate reasons that a director may have wanted those changes.

Making a Movie Based on a Book

Watch lessons on text versus film versions of a story in class and assign students to read a book that doesn't have a movie version. Divide students into groups and ask each group to pick a director and actors for a potential movie about the book. Have them discuss the themes and main point of the book and decide if these themes would make a good movie. Discuss how the theme or main point could be changed to fit a movie version of the story.
