About This Chapter
Standard: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
About This Chapter
Students who have developed competency in this standard know when and why to use a colon, semicolon, or period. They are also aware of basic spelling rules for the English language.
Tutorials in this standard offer instruction in such areas as:
- When to use a colon
- Appropriate use of semicolons
- Correct spelling of homonyms and homophones
Students exhibit expertise in this standard by writing and punctuating sentences clearly and effectively. In using semicolons and colons correctly, students express related ideas in a more nuanced way, contributing to stronger writing capabilities. In addition, students' ability to use accurate spelling reduces confusion and makes written communication more credible.
How to Use These Lessons in Your Classroom
The following are some ideas for how to incorporate these lessons into teaching about the CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.2 standard:
Colon and Semicolon Lessons
After viewing the video lesson on colons, semicolons, and periods, provide students with pairs of written sentences, and ask them to choose which of these three methods most effectively connects the two statements. Ask the students to explain why they chose the method they did.
Homonym and Homophone Practice
Assign the video on homonyms and homophones as homework. In a following class session, read sentences containing these types of words out loud, and ask students to write down which form of the respective word would be correct.
Show the lesson on spelling during class. Then have students compete in a spelling bee, allowing them to both observe the spelling of numerous words and learn from common spelling mistakes they may see repeated.
