Ch 2: Career Assessments

About This Chapter

Use the video lessons in this chapter to explore the benefits of personality, skills-based, interest and value-based career assessments. Our guidance counselors show you how each type can be used to discover which careers are right for you.

Career Assessments: Chapter Summary

In this chapter, our experienced guidance counselors introduce you to some of the assessment tools useful for determining which careers might be a good fit for you. They can also show you why matching up your interests, abilities or even your personality traits to the right career field can go a long way towards determining your job satisfaction and even your success. Use the lessons in this chapter to learn about the following:

Personality and Value-Based Assessment Tests

Begin with an overview of personality career assessments and take a closer look at the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This test measures where you fall on each of four personality scales designed to assess how you make decisions, perceive the world or gather information. It can even be used to find out whether you'd prefer to work with others or work alone.

Our guidance counselors also help you explore value-based career assessments useful for determining what motivates you to succeed and assessing which types of work relationships or job environments are right for you.

Interest and Skills-Based Assessment Tests

Also included in this chapter is an overview of skills-based assessments, like the Career Ability Placement Survey (CAPS). This test measures your aptitude in eight skills domains - including spatial relations, verbal reasoning and language use - and matches your strengths to career clusters. If you'd like to discover which careers tie into your occupational, subject area or recreational pursuits, we'll also walk you through some commonly used interest career assessments.
