Ch 10: CEOE Advanced Math: Complex Numbers
About This Chapter
CEOE Advanced Math: Complex Numbers - Chapter Summary
These lessons have been composed to help you review the concept of imaginary and complex numbers and the processes used to complete graphs and operations with them. They are taught by our professional instructors and are mobile device-compatible so you may have a effective and portable way to study:
- The concept of imaginary numbers
- How to add, subtract, multiply and divide complex numbers
- Process of graphing complex numbers
- Polar forms of complex numbers
To improve your retention of the material presented in these lessons, read the lesson transcripts. These are written overviews of the lessons that will help you review the material and study the key vocabulary of the chapter. After these lessons, take the lesson quizzes to discover the topics you don't understand. Use the video tags to return to and review the parts of the lessons that explain those topics.
CEOE Advanced Math: Complex Numbers Objectives
Oklahoma uses the Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators (CEOE) Advanced Mathematics exam to assess the knowledge of math teacher candidates. This computer-based certification exam is composed of 80 multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response item, which on test day you will be asked to complete in a four-hour testing session. Of the material covered in this exam, 18% is about mathematical processes and number senses and may include some questions about complex numbers.

1. What is an Imaginary Number?
The imaginary number 'i' is the square root of -1. Although this number doesn't actually exist, pretending that it does allows us to do a bunch of crazy math that scientists use every day. Learn the basics of that number 'i' here!

2. How to Add, Subtract and Multiply Complex Numbers
Knowing that complex numbers exist is the first step. But that knowledge alone won't help you do much with them. Learn the basics of complex number addition, subtraction and multiplication here!

3. How to Divide Complex Numbers
While adding, subtracting and multiplying complex numbers is pretty straightforward, dividing them can be pretty tricky. It comes down to the process of multiplying by the complex conjugate. Learn about what that is, and how to do it, here.

4. How to Graph a Complex Number on the Complex Plane
Graphing complex numbers is pretty straight forward, but it's not necessarily intuitive. Check out this lesson to learn the vocabulary and the conventions that you'll need.

5. Complex Numbers in Polar Form: Process & Examples
After watching this video lesson, you will be able to convert complex numbers from rectangular form to polar form easily by following the formulas you will see here. You will also learn how to find the power of a complex number.
