# Ch 12: CEOE Advanced Math: Exponents & Exponential Expressions

### About This Chapter

## CEOE Advanced Math: Exponents & Exponential Expressions - Chapter Summary

You most likely remember the basic properties of exponents and how to solve exponential expressions, but you might be a tad rusty on some of the more advanced concepts. These video lessons can reacquaint you with the information you'll need to know to do well on the algebra section of the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test. Topics covered in this chapter include:

- The main five exponent properties
- Rational exponents
- Using exponents and rational exponents to simplify expressions
- Exponential notation and simplifying exponential expressions
- Dividing and multiplying exponential expressions
- Working with negative exponents

### CEOE Advanced Math: Exponents & Exponential Expressions Chapter Objectives

Oklahoma educators who wish to be certified in mathematics may be required to take the CEOE Advanced Mathematics Test. For the most part, this test includes 80 multiple-choice style questions, along with one constructed-response question. The five sections of this extensive assessment include probability and statistics, trigonometry, mathematical logic and processes, algebra, and geometry. Test-takers will have about four hours to answer as many questions as possible. In order to pass, they can score no lower than 240 points.

Exponents and exponential expressions fall under the section of algebra. Test-takers should know that the constructed-response question will be about an algebra topic. To get yourself ready for either type of question in this section, make sure you understand all of the key terms and equations listed in the lesson transcripts. Pay special attention to learning about logarithmic functions and how they relate to exponential expressions.

### 1. What Are the Five Main Exponent Properties?

We'll look at the five important exponent properties and an example of each. You can think of them as the order of operations for exponents. Learn how to handle math problems with exponents here!

### 2. How to Simplify Expressions with Exponents

In this video, we will put all of the exponent properties we have learned together. Don't let lots of numbers and letters confuse you! Simplifying exponents can be easy and fun!

### 3. Rational Exponents

In this video, learn how to go from a rational exponent to a radical expression and back. No tricks or magic, just good math! We'll review the basics and look at a few examples.

### 4. Simplifying Expressions with Rational Exponents

Simplifying expressions with rational exponents is so easy. In fact, you already know how to do it! We simply use the exponent properties but with fractions as the exponent!

### 5. How to Use Exponential Notation

Exponential notation is a mathematical method for writing longer multiplication problems in a simplified manner. This lesson will define how to work with exponential notation and give some examples of how it is used.

### 6. Simplifying and Solving Exponential Expressions

What do we do with an exponent? In this lesson, we'll learn how to simplify and solve expressions containing exponents. We'll solve a variety of types of exponential expressions.

### 7. Multiplying Exponential Expressions

There are certain rules that govern working with exponential expressions. This lesson deals with the rule for multiplying exponential expressions. It will describe the rule and give some examples of how it works.

### 8. Dividing Exponential Expressions

Any time you work with expressions that contain exponents, you have to follow a specific set of rules that are not the same as when you are working with expressions that do not contain exponents. This lesson will describe the rules associated with dividing terms that contain exponents.

### 9. Negative Exponents: Writing Powers of Fractions and Decimals

Most numbers can be written in different ways, either as a fraction, decimal or exponent. This lesson will teach you how to write fractions and decimals using exponents and how to convert between the two.
