Ch 27: CEOE Advanced Math: Measurement

About This Chapter

This chapter on measurement will help you prepare to earn a teaching certification in advanced math. Study it so you can address the CEOE Advanced Math examination's measurement-related questions. The chapter includes quizzes and animated videos.

CEOE Advanced Math: Measurement - Chapter Summary

Master advanced math concepts and become adept at identifying various units of measurement before you take the CEOE Advanced Math examination. You'll find several lessons and examples within this chapter that will contribute to your existing knowledge of topics such as the metric system and U.S. customary units of measure. Studying these and other subjects will help you to:

  • Identify units of measure for time, weight, capacity and length
  • Explain how to convert, add, subtract, divide and multiply measurements
  • Convert units of time and metric system units
  • Understand the metric system's units of measure
  • Interpret maps, model drawings and scale drawings
  • Use the metric and U.S. customary systems to convert weight
  • Identify the metric or U.S. customary systems units necessary to measure distance, mass, weight and capacity
  • Explain how wrong calculations in measurement can result in rounding errors

The online video lessons in this chapter will permit you to brush up on the above measurement concepts and prepare to perform well during the CEOE Advanced Math assessment. The videos feature animation, volume controls, quizzes and graphics. Take the lessons with you via your handy mobile device and learn while maintaining your busy schedule. Quickly scan the lessons with the video tags. This can help you to identify the areas in which you need to build knowledge.

CEOE Advanced Math: Measurement Chapter Objectives

In all, there are five selected-response subareas and one constructed-response section on the CEOE Advanced Math examination. Subarea III, Measurement and Geometry, includes questions on the U.S. customary and metric systems. It adds up to 18% of the whole examination.

You should be prepared to answer 80 selected-response questions and tackle one constructed-response assignment on the computer-administered examination. A minimum score of 240 is necessary in order to earn a teaching license. You must finish the assessment in four hours or less.

Standard Units of Measurement for Length, Weight, Time & Capacity

1. Standard Units of Measurement for Length, Weight, Time & Capacity

Watch this video lesson to learn how to recognize the various units of measurement for length, weight, time and volume. Learn to recognize both U.S. units and metric units.

How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

2. How to Convert Standard Units of Measure

The United States uses pounds, miles, and Fahrenheit for measurements, but the rest of the world uses the metric system. This video lesson will help you to convert from one to the other easily, so you can understand kilometers and kilograms, too.

How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

3. How to Perform Basic Operations with Measurements

In this video lesson, you will learn how measurements are very much like variables when it comes to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. You will also see examples of how they are done.

The Metric System: Units and Conversion

4. The Metric System: Units and Conversion

Just like you and your friend communicate using the same language, scientists all over the world need to use the same language when reporting the measurements they make. This language is called the metric system. In this lesson we will cover the metric units for length, mass, volume, density and temperature, and also discuss how to convert among them.

How to Convert Units in the Metric System

5. How to Convert Units in the Metric System

If you can make dinner, you can convert units in the metric system. It's that easy! In this lesson, you'll learn about the three key things you'll need to perform conversions.

How to Read and Interpret Scale Drawings

6. How to Read and Interpret Scale Drawings

Watch this video lesson to learn how scale drawings and legends are used on maps and blueprints. Learn skills that will serve you well when traveling and when looking at the blueprints of a car.

Converting Units of Time

7. Converting Units of Time

After watching this video lesson, you will understand the units of time that we use to count time and know how to convert between these units. Learn the one number that you have to multiply and divide by to make your conversions.

Distance in the Metric System

8. Distance in the Metric System

Watch this video lesson to learn what units are used in the metric system for measuring. Also, learn how easy it is to convert from one unit to another.

U.S. Customary Units to Measure Distance

9. U.S. Customary Units to Measure Distance

After watching this video lesson, you will know what the units for measuring distance are in the United States and how to convert between the units. You will see that there is a special number for each conversion.

Measuring Capacity Using the Metric System

10. Measuring Capacity Using the Metric System

In this video lesson, you will learn what units are used to measure capacity or volume in the metric system. You will also learn how to convert between these units and what special numbers are required to do so.

U.S. Customary Units to Measure Capacity

11. U.S. Customary Units to Measure Capacity

After watching this video lesson, you will know how capacity or volume is measured in the U.S. You will know the units that are used as well as how to convert between the units.

Measuring Mass Using the Metric System

12. Measuring Mass Using the Metric System

After watching this video lesson, you will know which units for mass are used in the metric system along with how to convert between the units. You will find out which special numbers are used for the conversions.

U.S. Customary Units to Measure Weight

13. U.S. Customary Units to Measure Weight

Watch this video lesson to learn how the U.S. measures weight and how you can convert between them. Learn the conversion numbers that you need for each conversion along with the proper operation.

Converting Weight in Metric & U.S. Customary Systems

14. Converting Weight in Metric & U.S. Customary Systems

You may think that converting weight measurements from one system to another is tricky, but after watching this video lesson, you will be ready to convert any kind of weight measurement you encounter.

The Effects of Measurement & Rounding Errors

15. The Effects of Measurement & Rounding Errors

Just how accurate are we in the things we do? When we measure something or round an answer in a math problem, we are essentially saying that's close enough. But, how close is close enough? Let's explore the effects of measurement and rounding errors.
