About This Chapter

Learn about number patterns and series in this chapter of the CEOE Advanced Mathematics exam study guide. Video lesson and self-assessment quizzes teach you all you need to know about functions for teacher licensure in Oklahoma.

CEOE Advanced Math: Piecewise, Absolute Value & Step Functions - Chapter Summary

Review the information in this chapter in order to get ready for the CEOE Advanced Mathematics exam. Lessons in this chapter cover piecewise functions. Also covered are absolute value functions, step functions, and the techniques necessary to graph step functions. By the end of this chapter, you should be familiar with:

  • The definition of piecewise functions
  • Finding the domain of, graphing, and translating piecewise functions
  • The meaning of an absolute value function
  • Demonstrating how step functions can be graphed

Short, engaging video lessons are accompanied by self-assessment quizzes to ensure you fully understand and remember the material. Quizzes can also be printed as worksheets, and videos are accompanied by transcripts with important terms in bold print. Visit your dashboard to track your progress through the course.

Piecewise, Absolute Value & Step Functions Chapter Objectives

The CEOE Advanced Mathematics exam measures a student's knowledge of subject matter in accordance with Oklahoma educator licensure regulations. The exam measures mathematical processes and number sense; relations functions, and algebra; measurement and geometry; trigonometry and calculus; and probability, statistics, and discrete mathematics. The material covered in this Piecewise, Absolute Value and Step Functions chapter is tested in the relations, functions, and algebra portion of the CEOE exam, which comprises about 12% of the entire test. The exam includes approximately 80 multiple-choice questions and one open-response question.

What are Piecewise Functions?

1. What are Piecewise Functions?

A piecewise function is a certain type of function that is made up of different parts. This lesson will define and describe piecewise functions and teach you how to identify them and how to write them.

How to Find the Domain of Piecewise Functions

2. How to Find the Domain of Piecewise Functions

The domain of any function is all the values that x can be for that function. Piecewise functions are special functions that have different parts with unique rules for each part. This lesson will show you how to find the domain for piecewise functions.

How to Graph Piecewise Functions

3. How to Graph Piecewise Functions

Piecewise functions are specific functions that have more than one piece. There is a special trick to graphing these type of functions, which you will learn in this lesson.

Translating Piecewise Functions

4. Translating Piecewise Functions

Piecewise functions are two or more functions that only use part of a domain. If these functions need to be changed, we can translate them without even having to know the equation.

Absolute Value Function: Definition & Examples

5. Absolute Value Function: Definition & Examples

The absolute value function shows up in the world around us in many different areas. In this lesson, we will define the absolute value function, look at its characteristics, observe its graph, and look at some examples involving this function.

Step Function: Definition, Equation & Examples

6. Step Function: Definition, Equation & Examples

In this lesson, we'll learn what a step function is and become comfortable with this type of function. We'll examine common examples, such as the floor and ceiling functions and the heaviside function.

How to Graph Step Functions

7. How to Graph Step Functions

In this lesson, we'll learn the definition of a step function and two of its family members: floor functions and ceiling functions. We'll then look at how to graph step functions using two real world examples.
